Auxilary fan kicks in late?

I had this happened to me a few times already, during slow traffic, the temp would raise to just a bit before overheating (red zone) before the auxilary fan would kick in, but once it kicked in, it operates normally afterwards for the rest of the trip even in stop and go traffic.

Does this sound normal or is my auxilary fan fan is about to go? Should the temp be stay rock solid at the middle range???

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

i'd say there is something wrong. My temp gauge is pretty steady except under extreme conditions. After 6 or so hard laps at buttonwillow chasing a porsche in 106F heat, my temp gauge started climbing. When it's warm, or i'm in traffic, the aux fan seems to be running more often than not.

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

I have the same problem from time to time, seems to happen when I am extremely gentle with the car while it is still warming-up (stuck in traffic). Its gets to a bit over 3/4 on the temp. gauge.

Thermostat would be my guess?

Is it possible what you are really seeing is the thermostat initially opening on a warming up engine? On many cars, the gauge will get a little over normal because no water is flowing. Once water starts to flow, gauge comes down within seconds. I wouldn't expect the aux fan to kick on when the thermostat first opens since the car is really not hot yet. Admittedly, I have not noticed it in the Beast, but I have seen this on my other vehicles.
Regards,
Jerry

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

On a somewhat related note, I dont have problems with my temp spiking, but my aux fan turns on as soon as I start the car (even in the morning). Anyone else have an overeager fan?

I'll have to check mine in the morning, but I think it runs if the AC is on.

Jerry

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

they aux fan should run at varying speeds. It goes on with the ac, but kicks into high speed when the temp gets above a certain level. There have been issues and possibly a recall for 01 model years fans.(not sure, might want to search)

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

Hmm... I talk to my local dealer and they said the fan recall does not apply to my car according to the VIN number. So I'm guessing thermostat then

Re: Auxilary fan kicks in late?

If its during warmup I would think its the thermostat just opening a bit on the late side, so water is not circulating to the radiator. The aux fan could already be running (depending on where the temp. sensor is), but no coolant to cool. Once the thermostat cracks open, all systems go. Slight mechanical delay from the thermostat.
