2002 E39 Oil Filter problem

After my son totaled my first e39 I replaced it last year(same year). I had an oil filter left from the first one so assumed there would be no issue (having used this type/model number filter in my other 02 M5). Welllll....this one has the same screw on filter cover but the filter itself screws into the base and is closed at the top. The cover has nothing coming out of its center. When I look at pics of 02 M5 filters they all look like the one I have (open top and bottom with no threads anywhere). Can anyone tell me what is going on (and what filter I need...)?

Not sure I understand you completely. Was the other E39 (the one that got totaled) an M5?
The oil filters between M5 and non M5 are different. Also, the M5 oil filter housing has a spiral inside it which is also different from the non M5.
The oil filter itself doesn't screw into the housing on the M5. It just snaps onto the oil filter housing cover.

First...thanks for the response.
Second....the other E39 was an M5 too.
Third....what you describe is what I recalled in terms of what you'd see when changing the oil in my other M5.
Fourth...this is an M5 (checked the VIN Plate)

BUT>>>>>>

Fifth...I see what the problem is! When I went to pull out the filter I turned it counter clockwise so it unscrewed the spiral oil filter housing thus leaving it inside the filter and making the filter appear "threaded". DOPE SLAP FOR ME!
This is the first oil change on this car for me so I inspected everything a little more carefully than normal. The very top of the spiral housing (just above what appears to be a green O ring has a small (3/4" x 1/8" deep) chip. I exposes a small part of the top of the O ring (which is actually squarish). The housing still fits squarely into the cap and what I assume is a pressure relief ball in the center (spring below it inside the housing) is unaffected. Do you think I am safe putting it all back together or do I need a new housing?

PS to add to the fun I looked up the oil filter system for this car on the BMW locator.....it doesnt show the spiral housing...maybe I used the wrong locator?

many thanks to all who weighed in on this...perhaps the answer is contained in the Pelican admonition that it is only for cars with "updated filters". Now all I have to do is figure out why the actual filters that different sources have for this car are "different" i.e. some have rubber collars on top and others dont (just put up a new post in the hope that it might not only answer my question but also help someone else with an easier search in the future)

also...the part that I have has threads on the bottom....the part that is pictured in the "blow ups" and on Pelican doesnt appear to have them and also looks like it slides over a tube in the main housing. Close but not really the same thing....odd that BMW went out of their way to engineer this thing and then doesnt even acknowledge making it!
PS Called my dealer.....the parts person was going to "review this with my parts team and get back to you".....quick translation, "I have no freaking idea what the heck it is you are looking for....go away!"
