Differential and Tranny Fluid for our M5?

At 45k miles, I would like to change out my fluids. I went to BMW dealer to purchase Differential and Transmission fluid, but they wouldn't sell it to me.

They said they purchase it in 55 gal drums and had no way of selling them??

Just wondering If anyone changes fluids themselves or just go to an Independent to change the fluids?

Is there a good independent in the Bay Area?

Find Another dealer...that's BS

The Trans Oil is available in a 5L bottle, at around $125 MSRP.

The Diff Oil is Castrol 85W-140 Synthetic, it's available in 1 pint bottles or a box of 3. The car needs 3 pints....price is about $15/pint

Re: Differential and Tranny Fluid for our M5?

I have half of my 5 liter bottle of tranny fluid left after filling the new tranny that I just installed. I wish I could ship it as it cost me $28 per liter and I obviously don't need it all.

Thanks,
Eric

I changed my brake and coolant fluids at Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley. Check them out on the internet.

Ask them for 83.22.0.309.031

5L MTF-LT-2

They may not CARRY it, but it is available. It also comes in drums IIRC...

Has anyone actually seen a BMW service bulletin or similar technical recommendation specifying that LT2 has superceded LT1 for use in earlier cars?

The LT2 product was never OEM fill or service fluid in an E39 Getrag. This new fluid is OEM fill in ZF transmissions, not Getrag 6spd.

I stand corrected.

I've only found references to the new fluid as it supercedes the LT1... but as you point out no specific TSB for it's actual USE in an older tranny. Since it is a "life time" fill, it might be hard to find that.

If you buy a rebuilt, what is in that?

When did the change from LT1 to LT2 occur?

As has been seen with trannies, slight changes in lube content can create incompatabilites with parts/seals in the trans.....

Oceans,

I had a similar problem to yours - checking with 5 dealers in the NY/NJ area, they all told me that they order the diff fluid in the 55 gallon bins. However, two of the dealers said that as long as I bring my own container, they have no problem selling me the fluid in smaller denominations.

I got mine replaced professionally and I used the opportunity to replace the diff seals as there was a very slight leakage. This would be a good time to inspect yours.

Cheers

Re: Differential and Tranny Fluid for our M5?

The dealer gave me LT1 fluid for my tranny... I hope that is right!!!

So does the dealer sell the seals for the rear differential... is there a part number for those? I really need to change mine when I do the diff fluid.
