Intermittant Lumpy Running

Hi, prior to me letting my local dealer take the shirt off my back to investigate, I thought I'd ask the experts!!

For the last week, my car has developed intermittant lumpy running - it lasts for about 30 seconds and then seems to clear. (Occurs cold and warm, most noticed when up to temperature.)

I receive no warnings on the dash which makes me think it could be the fuel/ fuel filter.

Does anyone have any suggestions - I still have 3 green bars so service is not imminent.

Any thoughts would be greatfully received

Regards

Martin

Re: Intermittant Lumpy Running

My first thought would be to think that it is the fuel too - I don't think it would be the fuel filter and here's why:

I mistakenly ran LEADED gas in the car around 40,000 miles ago and just recently, changed the fuel filter as kind of routine maintenance at close to 100,000 miles.

It was the original to the car and despite using the leaded fuel as mentioned, the change made zero difference - I really thought that it would so, at least in my estimation, I would guess the you may have a bad tankful.

Good Luck

Re: Intermittant Lumpy Running

I'm not sure what it could be and am talking as a lay person but, how about the ECU? Maybe it's not givng the correct starting info and not keeping enough gas to cold idle?

Of course, you do not step on the gas pedal prior to starting? I read where we're not supposed to do that unless it's really cold.

Wondering if it could be the MAFS as they don't always say when they are not working proerly.

Any impact on your Cats? I always heard that the lead in the fuel will destroy the platinum catalytic converters....

Sorry to veer off the lumpy topic, but at least it bumps it

Coil starting to go bad or plug wires worn? Are the spark plugs in good shape and are they tight?
Regards,
Jerry

Yes, initially it made the SES light come on numerous times usually indicating either a CAT or 02 fault but, almost 40,000 miles later, I have not replaced the CATS and all seems to be well.

Just recently however, I did replace the O2 sensors both pre and post CAT and my tech Nate told me after showing me that he had never seen O2 sensors so discolored - he attributed this to the leaded fuel.

Do the easiest checks first, test the MAF yourself:
