Well last week I'm driving to the gym (2002 E39 M5 with 84,000 miles)and suddenly I get the message "STOP OIL PRESSURE". I immediately get off the road and turn off the car and have it towed to my mechanic. Oil level was okay when I stopped. There was some whitish stuff on the top and bottom of dipstick. The car has been getting louder than it's normal Vanos knock lately but running like a scalded ape!! Mechanic just informs me that there is metal(aluminum) and bearing material in the oil. He said the car probably lost oil pressure and suffered a catastrophic failure. Of course that made my ******* day!! Just put a bunch of money into rotors, brakes, wheel bearing, CSB for the driveshaft.... any words of encourage or am I ****ed?? Feel like I just lost a family member
First I would open up the oil filter and even drop the oil pan to see how much/what the shavings look like and go from there. I am local to you and could help out possibly...
Find out what is going on before you get too bummed out. For example, if rod bearings and no damage to the crank, then you have about a $1500-$2000 repair bill. Not cheap, but not the end of the world.
If the motor is really toast, then if it were me, I would look for a good used motor and sell the old motor as spare parts to Clemster.
Keep posting, lot of experience here to help you out, no matter what it turns out to be.
Or better yet, spend a little more and get a newly rebuilt S62 that costs substantially less than a new motor from BMW and is substantially better. Then instead of a mystery engine, you have something you can rely upon for 150-200k miles.
FWIW, I was burning a quart every 250 miles when it got worse... I had the Clemster install a used motor into my M5 (my wife made me let him do it...) and it's running better than ever!

Sorry to hear...seems like you have owned this car since 2002, so I definitely understand how you feel. Agree with Jerry - best to wait to find out the whole story. I would be freaking out as well. Keep us posted.
Absolutely correct. No sense in getting excited until you know.
3 or 4 years ago I had a car towed to me that presented near identical symptoms. Found metal in the pan but looked further and what appeared to have happened was the oil pump tensioner failed and the chain climbed the gear which bent the shaft and destroyed the pump. The failed tensioner makes then noisy. We found lots of aluminum and bushing/bearing material. Logic was if the pump failed ,and all the material was from it, that would have prevented any material going into the engine. We looked no further the owner was prepared to just throw a pump on it and see. That seemed to do the trick, because last I heard it was still a DD.
Besides there seem to be quite a few engines available for these cars now as a lot have had wrecks in recent years. Certainly not the death of the car but heart surgery is still expense.
Thanks!! I hope that is what happened to my car. It was getting pretty noisy could actually hear the ticking and rattling inside the car and until about 2500rpm. The car was running strong. We will see. Unfortunately my mechanic is basically a one man show and is backed up 15 cars. This could take a while.....
I see you're fairly local. If you need some diagnosis, or install of that new motor, I know a great Indy that is very knowledgeable in M cars in Melvindale. Better than the stealership or an indy that doesn't have much experience in M cars (usually takes them longer to figure out). PM me if you're interested.
just my .02 but while you're in there it probably would be a good idea to replace your rod bearings to (since it's oil related). I've heard good things about the WPC Treated ones, don't know just something to think about.
That does look like a chain guide bolt. Was there brown plastic or chunks of aluminum in the pan as well?
If you end up making a repair and need an oil pump, I have several used units that are confirmed good with less than 90k miles.
If you are going the replacement route and don't want to spend the money required for one of Peter's baller builds, I can offer an excellent "mystery motor" at very fair pricing.:wink I currently have two (94k and 107k) with two more on the way. I've sold more than 30 of these and as far I know, all are still running.
There was aluminum in the oil. I saw that the oil pump is over $1,300 new!! Please send me some quotes on a oil pump and those engines. Thanks PM would work or email at dezaremba@gmail.com
My Beast is up and running!! Engine install complete and looks as good as new!! Hell I could eat off of it!! I can not give Adam Bajrak enough praise. I am so lucky that our paths crossed in this forum. He is THE MAN!! Not only did he put another engine in my car but he is taking care of all kinds of things that need fixed. He knows the E39 M5 like no one else!! If you need an engine, parts or advice look no further than Adam!! I only wished he lived nearby in Michigan!!
I couldn't agree more. I have yet to meet Adam in person, but we have spoken on the phone several times, and have bought a few things from him. He is a pleasure to deal with, and very helpful with any questions that I might have.
Great to see you got hooked up with him, and the man, in turn, hooked you up!
My baby ready to be loaded for the trip back to Michigan. Adam took great care of her in Maryland. I have had some PM's concerning my experience with my engine replacement with Adam (clemster). I don't have enough posts to respond to them but if you are following this thread you should have your answer!! Deal with confidence and ship your vehicle!! The cost was very minimal considering everything that was done. The alternatives i.e. new or newer M5, rebuild of engine or even another vehicle CTS-V? would have cost significantly more!! OEM summer wheels are going on when she returns!!
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
