problem of the week...

sooo....got the guibo replaced under warranty a week or so ago. the car drives perfect. however, i now have a clunking noise I drive over any bumps in the road. nothing you can feel, just hear! any ideas? i think it may be the rear diff. maybe when they replaced the guibo they didn't tighten something.

Re: problem of the week...

First thing that comes to my mind is a broken rear swaybar bracket.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a guibo? :p

aka hardy disk aka the rubber thing between the transmission and the driveshaft. it's right under the center armrest...i hope it's the rear swaybar link but i doubt it. maybe a U joint?

Re: problem of the week...

A lot of the time you need to get the exhaust off to get to the guibo (not 100% sure in the E39), so maybe the exhaust didnt get on one of the hangers correctly? That would cause a noise.

Re: problem of the week...

Diffs are not cheap, so I'll hope with you too. Diff problems dont usually just crop up like that out of the blue, but sway bar brackets and reinstalled exhausts do. Best wishes.

Re: problem of the week...

I agree with the exhaust guesses.

To check:

When the exhaust is cold, and you wear a pair of old gloves, shake the exhaust endpipes on each side vigourously in all directions. If that makes any noise, it might be the exhaust system that causes the noise you hear.

If you can get under the car, or put it on a lift, you can shake the exhaust components (for example the heat-shields) that are under the car too.
