Dynavin N6 + Dsp + Active sub question

Hi everyone. I've read through all related posts I believe but can't quite find what I am looking for.

During the initial install I attempted to leave the stock amp for rear Nokia speakers, run Alpine mids and tweets through 4 channel amp and wire additional Alpine active sub for extra bass. That didn't work, stock amp went dead and the head unit emitted no sound. Initially it kind of felt that the head unit was confused as to which amp to run.

So, I've reconnected all stock speakers, removed all amps, allowed oem amp sit overnight and then plugged it back in. The sound was back on, factory amp perhaps went into some sort of protect mode. Now, having read many posts my understanding is that aftermarket speakers won't sound good because factory amp is weak. Bav sound stage 1 seems an option but I would prefer not to spend any more on stereo and keep the cash for maintenance aspects, especially given that I've blown over 3k on front auxiliary preventative refresh and other improvements over the last 6 months.

I can live with stock mids and tweets however would like a bit more bass. Getting my hands on m audio subwoofers is probably impossible, especially in the UK. So, I wondered whether I could connect just my active sub to Dynavin head unit with Dsp and without any further speaker upgrades (for now).... and without blowing the stock amp. Afraid to try it unless someone could offer some encouragement.

My understanding is that DSP is tricky. In a factory setup with DSP amp, the volume is controlled via DSP not the head unit like a conventional setup.

Therefore, I dont think the pre-outs will work to control volume of DSP speakers with sub and amp.

Hopefully Dennis will respond.

Might be a good thing to damage that factory amp..... lol

You would be running the sub lines straight to the sub, it has nothing to do with the dsp. You're dsp is already working to run the woofers/tweeters.
And the sub should have a remote out jack to independently control the gain.

Hi,

I've no direct experience with the Dynavin N6 and the UK importer for the brand doesn't seem to know/support the brand/units very well at all. Your first point of call should be them, perhaps they know if the N6 is being used to connect to the OEM DSP amp can the subwoofer RCA outputs be used as well. If they know then all good. If not, you'll need to look to see if anyone with an N6 can provide more info. The USA importer for the brand/units supports them very well indeed and will most likely know for sure. That's Jeff at J&T Distributing in Fresno, California. I'd suggest dropping him a line and perhaps some funds to pay for the the support seeing as you didn't purchase from him.

From there, which powered/active sub are you using and where have you placed it? Ideally, you'd have a custom small enclosure that fits up against the rear seat bulkhead and has the subwoofer 'fire' through the ski hatch as this method is 100% efficient - all the bass energy 'flows' into the cabin. If you don't have this configuration, then efficiency is much reduced and that means it doesn't sound as good. In that case, if you are happy then all good but keep in mind you'll be running a compromised setup.

Cheers, Dennis!

Hi Dennis, thanks for your response.

Yes, UK distributors have no technical knowledge unfortunately. Whilst after sales support was offered as part of the package, I found their know how to be disappointing to say the least.

I've attached a picture of all the gear. I've installed it all in my E39 535 in January as replacements to the awful sounding basic 6 speaker system. As you've mentioned, I've positioned the active sub within the ski hatch hole once I've cut the metal enclosure out. The result was excellent.. Obviously not the best system in the world, of course not, but enough to be enjoyable.

Then, two months later, I decided to get an M5 and reverted 535 back to stock prior to sale. The idea was to replicate what I had... but then DSP got in a way and everything other than the head unit has been gathering dust, since March. What a waste!

Thanks for the info on the distributor over the pond. I'll try to get in touch and hopefully he will be able to assist.

Cheers!

What I did was remove the DSP amp and toss it. The DSP is a weakling. Powered via 14 AWG wire. My Alpine 5 channel which is not that big (40 by 4 plus 250 by 1) uses 4 guage!
Run your fronts with the PMX amp. Run the rear coaxials with a mini amp. I used one from Sure Electronics and it works great. And you cannot beat the price.

Update..... the Sure Electronics amp I was using to run my rear coaxials turned out to be the source of significant alternator whine I've been chasing. Upgraded to a Kenwood mini amp.

How is your install going?

To be honest I have not progressed the install any further mate. Unscheduled engine upgrades got in a way along with other aspects that needed attention, like the stock mufflers. ;) Got some time off during xmas festive season, will try to take it all apart weather permitting ;) thanks for the heads up on the amp though, looks like I'll need to get another one along with second set of speakers/tweeters for the rear doors.
