Windshield Replacement

I finally bought my beast (E39) about three weeks ago and a few days ago while driving on the highway, a rock (i think) was kicked up from the truck in front of me and cracked my windshield. The crack started spidering before I could do anything about it and looks like I need to replace the windshield. The rudder around the windshield is cracking and chipping off so I figured I should replace that as well. Does anyone know an approximate price I could expect to replace this so I don't get hosed on the price? I'm going to call a few shops today in the area (North of San Francisco) today to get quotes. Also, I'm assuming OEM is the way to go?
Thanks!

Sounds like an opportunity to install the "Comfort Glass" windshield.

Ended up with a ten inch hole in my bumper, so I did what any logical person would do

The rubber seal around the windshield is less than $50 and (from what I have seen on this board) it is easy to replace.

No glass coverage? I had mine replaced a while back, had the dealer do it using OE glass. It was about $300 out of pocket (above the generic glass price insurance would cover). Insurance covered new gaskets, etc.

If you have glass coverage in your Comprehensive in California, they cannot 'charge' the claim against you. I have $100 deductible on glass and do 1-3 each year (5 vehicles).

I prefer OE glass. They will call a Pilkinton glass an "OEM Glass" since pilkinton made a windshield for some BMW somewhere....Not sure who males the OE replacements now...

Is there any special way to approach the insurance company if you want your glass replaced, but there are no cracks? My glass is so pitted, when sunlight is directly shining into the windshield, it makes the glass seem frosted. Very dangerous conditions for sure. But if the sun does not hit it just right, the glass appears just fine so it might be very hard to justify it on a claim.
