At stock height on the stock suspension the car felt very balanced to me. Once I added my coil overs I felt a very distinct fore/aft movement when going over bumpy areas in the road. I decided to stick with the stock front sway bar but added a Dinan rear and it eliminated the issue. The suspension changes are to either personal preference/affordability or to whatever the Board seems to think is the best. There are dozens of combinations you could go with so asking which way to go you'll get tons of opinions.
I'd say if you can at least ride in some other Beasts that have had different changes you'll get a better idea.
There is a ton of info and insight on this issue posted.
Bottom line: Stock staggered wheels? Upgrade to the Dinan rear bar ONLY to obtain a more neutral rotation into a curve.
Square set up? Use the Dinan FRONT and Rear Bar to maximize the front tire contact patch. Be aware that the front bar install is a PITA.
Use Beast Brackets, Poly mounting bushings, and new end links. It will allow the bars to work as designed.
I added the rear bar on my stock set up and it stops the rear end lift on turn in. The results are a more controlled body roll on hard runs through the twisties on my way to cars and coffee. Great mod as the M5 bar then went on my 528i which LOVED the transformation from the grocery getter whale wiggle.
Is this the one you guys purchased. will i fit the M5? If not what Eibach did you purchase? Also where can I get the best deal on the Dinan rear sway.
this is all I would like to do for now as this is probably the easiest and least cost upgrade on this car. Just purchased by the way. Very happy with this car I must say. it is a thrill to drive. crazy fun. All for $8500.00... I have now spent about $1000.00 on some costmetics to make it prettier and am about to spend another $1000.00 to repair a few issues here and there. I love this car and this era and enjoy working on these cars. The prior owner put in new vanos too and myriad of repairs. Still have a long way to go to make it perfect but that is what i like.
The Eibach bars listed for the 540i are fine. They make a 28mm front one and an 18mm rear one. If you are doing the front, I would probably suggest using their rear bar too in place of the Dinan slightly smaller one; although, frankly, I don't know their moment arm dimensions so it might make sense to search the board to see who has measured the three Dinan adjustment hole moment arms versus the stock bar one and the Eibach one -- then a decision could be more easily made.
TireRack has the Eibach front and rear kit for $396 shipped. Beastpower rear brackets are mandatory by the way. Stock ones will definitely break. Also don't forget that you have to drop the front subframe some to change the front sway bar -- it's a time consuming pia but also a good time to change the center track rod, tie rods, and idler arm bushing too.
Thank you and I think I am going to leave the front alone and just add the rear . I have a handle on a used Dinan sway bar. If the price is right, i may just grab this one and defintely will be ordering the beastpower brackets. Thank you!
Tom
