Just out of my curiosity, i am planning on replacing my dirty, old, stained, original tan floor mats and am in the market for purchasing new. My car is an '00 Royal Red Metallic over a full Nappa Heritage Caramel. The questions here is, would potentially purchasing black stock embroidered M5 mats contrast well against the tan carpet, and caramel leather? The only justification I've given myself is the accessory pieces, i.e. the black leather dash, steering wheel, upper door trim, shift boot, etc etc would tie in and balance out the black floor mats. All opinions or suggestions and/or pictures of your vehicles dressed in black floor mats with tan carpets are appreciated! I will attach a shot of my front driver side interior.
I have chiaretto and carmel and swapped for black also I changed the seat skirts to black which also helps make a better visual transition plus it just looks a ****load better
Right on, thats nice i imagine. the seat skirts balances out the black mats a tad more i assume. The only thing i was thinking, in the picture above with caramel / black mats is the car is suiting black trim. so that helps a ton too. I'm going to just pick up a set of black mats and go for it. steam clean my Caramel to have fresh original ones, as well.
I prefer the black floor mats if you don't want to swap in black carpet. I personally can't stand the caramel carpet with the caramel interior. In my old M5, I installed black carpet and black seat bases and it's how it should have come IMO.
Wow, i love the look! the black to me balances the car out well. The only negative thing i could see people saying about the black carpet and mats, is that anything under the steering wheel, looks like a black hole and everything looks lost down there. I'm sure aluminum trim sport pedal covers would add some color. But overall, i love the look!
Not to be a downer, but I am fairly certain the mats in your pic are not original. At least not original M5 mats. More than likely they are E39 tan (sand beige or something) mats. The only colors available per the FAQ were Black, Caramel and English Green. From your pic, your mats look a bit lighter and less 'orange' to me contrasted with the carpet on your transmission tunnel. If they look washed out, they are likely not M5 caramel.
To answer your question though, obviously the black mats contrasting with the caramel is a matter of opinion. My M5 has the caramel interior but came with black mats which now serve as my 'trunk carpet.' Through persistence and pestering I was able to source 2 sets of M5 caramel mats in varying condition, so if you really do want OEM caramel mats it is possible. I personally like the 'full' caramel look.
Something I had considered though, was using whatever tan color was available for other E39's (the ones you seem to have) and having the M5 logo embroidered on the mats, but it seemed a bit of a hassle to me.
Totally aside from your original question, I am currently in the process of swapping out the wood trim for the Titan line trim. In addition, I am swapping the shift knob and E-brake handle to all black leather since both of those have wood accents. As far as I know, unless you did a custom interior, all caramel interiors came with wood trim. So I will have full black leather interior with caramel carpet/leather. I had asked awhile ago, and opinion seemed to be fairly polarizing with most not liking it. I certainly understand the opinion and wouldn't think it would work myself, if I had not seen it in another car. To each their own. Perhaps coincidentally, I have had previously had a BMW that had a fully contrasting black and tan leather combo. I liked it..
Stellar response, i appreciate it! in regards to my floor mats not being original m5 mats... I'm unsure, I'm the second owner ( first being a close family friend ) who purchased the car new ( hence OG owner ) and the car sits at 42k original miles. i highly doubt he swapped floor mats, i tend to believe its just dirty floor mats ( i didn't clean the carpet, or floor mats in the picture ). i also received everything original he owned with the car, oem car cover, all NAV disks, original manuals, books, coffee mug, all 3 keys, and cargo net in trunk. and with such low mileage, i don't think they would've needed replacing. the cars never seen snow and hardly rain.
I do believe its all down to preference when it comes to the black mats in caramel colored carpet. i will test some black mats and see how they suit the car.
Also, Im unsure on the caramel/wood trim fact, although i think you're correct. the caramel is always paired with the wood trim. i do personally love the Titan trim. i considered the swap from the wood. But, not having the sport seats the titan trim would not flow well with the M1CR seats, IMO. Good luck on the swap!! thanks for the info.
I wouldn't know if black carpets would look good on a caramel interior, but i have a suggestion. have you tried washing the mats? just take some carpet soap, soak the mat, and scrub the mats down, then just wash them off and let dry. i've done that on my beige carpeted car (not a bmw) at home and after that, the carpets looked essentially brand new.
No, i have not gotten around to cleaning the mats themselves ( which i will do for certain ) i think i just like the way black looks in the m5 vs the all caramel look. thanks!
wow i love it! we have different trims on our M5's , but nonetheless, the black doesn't look bad at all against the floor carpet! the seat bases will tie in perfectly with the mats. interior looks sharp, man!
I have had black mats in my car since the beginning; replaced the front ones once. Looks great, doesn't show the wear/dirt. I have the brand-new caramel mats in a box in my storage closet...
Not sure why anyone would want caramel carpet/floor mats since it's the dirtiest part of the interior. And since the headliner is black, I think it balances it out well.
