Rodents in the DD engine bay?

I would understand if there were rodents in a car that sits for any amount of time, but it surprises me that I may have had a rodent in my bay in my car that I drive daily and have never had this issue. I am assuming it was a rodent because I can not think of anything else that would do this to a part in this location of the bay.

The good thing is that its an easy to replace part. But it worries me that other things that are out of sight could be damaged now or in the future.

Does it look like rodent nibbles to you as well?

Definitely some little critters in there. Little bastards!! That must be so frustrating. You need to invest in something! Sticky paper? Rat traps? I couldnt sleep at night knowing that there might be a mouse or rat doing insane amounts of rubber/harness damage in just a single night. Tie a cat to your car at nights.

Car isnt garaged. Been the non-garage queen since ownership and never had this type of issue before. We typically dont have rodent issues in my area, but I know that can change at any time. Will have to really check things this week to make sure nothing else was damaged. Already bought replacement parts that should arrive in a few days. The car does sit close to trash cans so I may have to do something about that.

Many years ago, I had a rodent nesting in the area under my back seat on top of the gas tank. They chewed through some important things(wiring and fuel lines). The car was daily driven at the time. I assumed when I parked in the driveway in the evening, they would climb on board and enjoy the radiating heat from my exhaust.

Srsly tho. I have two garage kept cars. It took a lot of work to mouseproof it, but it was worth it. I would setup mouse traps right up against inside of your tires at night. Peanut butter works well. :) It might just be one lone mouse that's taken up residence near your car. He's likely starting his climb at the tires.
When I used to have to de-mouse my garage after I'd cleared them all out I might not see another for a month...or a year. There was no set pattern or anything. But once they get cozy they don't leave I can tell you that much.

No ferrets running around outside. I got the parts in to replace, but did not have time to get it done over the weekend. Im going to try and get home early enough to have time to replace the top hoses and inspect the lowers.

Has this same issue on another E39 that was covered for the winter outdoors. The little bastards chewed and built a nest in the hood pad. Four mouse traps touched with peanut butter and the bodies in the trash can all issues gone. Tried to use my watch dog but he failed.

Definitely rodents - I have seen this before but usually in colder months. You can also spray the hoses with coyote urine - a natural deterrent which can be found at feed shops or online. I know it's sac-religious to think about putting animal piss on the old M5 - but it is effective.

Well, I replaced both hoses on Sunday. If it persists, I will shop on Amazon to see if I can get 2 day delivery on Coyote pee pee :)

Ive parked in this same spot for over 8 years and this is the first time this has happened. So if it persists, I will take action. But for now, im hoping it doesnt occur again.

Thanks for the inputs everyone.
