Just had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires mounted and balanced . . .

and they came covered, especially along the outside lip of the rims, with a fairly thick white, goopy (no jokes please) lubricant. Before bringing the rims in I had washed and waxed the inside and outside of the rims and would rather not have to do it again. Question: will a simple wipe down with a rag do or will the goop attract dirt/dust such that a complete wash is required? Thanks.

/Rich

it's how they mount um, and no a simple wipe will not do, a hard washing may not do either it takes time, but a hard washing is a start.

Re: Just had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires mounted and balanced . . .

I have the same on my 03, a good tire. a bit noisy in some cornering but heck, I like a good warning before I lose it ;-) Not sure about your question on the goo. I just wash mine with a car wash soap (Macquires) and detail. Look great!

Re: Just had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires mounted and balanced . . .

dmc;
Hmm, compared to the original Pilot Sports, my PS2s are very quiet at their limits even with lots of miles on them. Or was the extra noise of the Pilots from more understeer (slip) of the tires compared to the PS2s. Some Michelin MXX3s I had years ago had a nice growl before the squeal. In a 3000GT VR-4 I could play with the throttle all day long doing a 4 wheel drift when the tires were growling and had absolute confidence that I wouldn't loose it.

Re: Just had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires mounted and balanced . . .

its just the lubricant you put on the tyre to help mount them. Especially on low profile tyres, they can be a pain in the *** to get over the rims sometimes!

Re: Just had Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires mounted and balanced . . .

You got it, it was understeer that was causing them to talk ever so slightly. I don't mind a chirp or two. On serious cornering they are quite well behaved and quiet (maybe the engine noise and concentation neutralizes any noise). WHat I also found really quite amazing abou these PS2s is tire pressure, they do not lose any! Between checks I see maybe a variation of .5 pounds, though consistent front and back. I have fond memories of the Yokies A008s and how they gripped and were very quiet. I am looking to try the new Yokohama tires (for 2005) when these give up in about one year's time (I drive 15K per year and do not anticipate getting more then that - not a complaint, just how these things go and I enjoy fresh tires).

Fast 5 --

I mounted the standard OEM sizes: 245/40/18 front, 275/35/18 rear.

Re: question for Rich .........

Great choice of tires. Just incase you have lowered your car, you might want to think about adjusting the camber to minimize the inner wear of those PS2's!!
