Still lurking trying to figure out if I want to purchase a used M5. My budget dictates that it be at 2000 or 2001.
My fear is that expensive repairs will ruin my experience, and I want to protect against that.
My question is:
1. Extended warranty: If I purchase an M5 from a private party, can I get an extended warranty on a 2000 or 2001 that is "out of warranty" at the moment?
2. Whose extended warranty is the best? Who can I trust? The carmax.com warranty looks pretty bulletproof... Is there one that is as good or better?
3. I searched and found some extended warranty horror stories. Has anyone had a great experience?
Once the original warranty runs out, your out of luck with BMW.
The trick is extend before expiration.
If you purchase a CPO vehicule from BMW, then you have a warranty to 6yr/100k mile.
If you are buying from used car dealer or private owner, then you're limited to aftermarket warranty.
If you fancy something a little different how about a UK spec right hand drive facelift with extended warranty? VERY high spec...mine will be for sale at some point in the near future I think....
I just purchased a 2000 M5 (Dec - 04) as a CPO. Although they speak of 6yr/100k, it is calc'd from the date of original delivery and the first owner. In my case, there's about 18mos/55k left (time will expire before the miles).
I would recommend, as I have seen in other threads, that you have a trusted mechanic review the car. It's best to spot the claims early in the post-sale event before everyone's memory of the commitments expire.
If I purchased a CPO warranty from out of state Dealer where I wil be buying the car, does this CPO warranty valid on every BMW dealer including my local dealership ?

You might check with your local BMW dealer. I just purchased a 3rd party extended warranty for my 2000 M5 from BMW of Nashville. I had 37,000 miles on the car and the warranty is good for an additional 36 months or total mileage of 85,000. Cost was close to $2900. I felt it was my best option since it was recommended by my local dealer and the cost was comparable to other ones I checked into. We'll see.
Johnk,
I strongly recommend that you check out an extended warranty. When (not if - when) your beast breaks, it will be very expensive. I got one when I was within 2K miles of expiring and it's paid for itself already when one of the Vanos units failed this spring. It cost me $2500 last spring, and it goes 4 yrs or 100k miles, with a $25 deductable.
You also need to ensure you understand what the process is for getting the claim serviced. Some companies want to send a represenative down to look at the parts and talk to the Service Advisor if the repair goes above a threshold. You can easily loose a day this way. The SA should know the drill for this if its necessary, and you shouldn't have to get involved unless the two can't agree. If you have a relationship with a BMW SA already, they may be able to steer you away from ones that are PITA to deal with.
I love this car, but make no mistake, it takes a lot to keep this mistress happy! :M5launch:

I too been considering th ee39 M5 probably 02 model, but I also have concerned with the maintenance cost nightmare (when it runs out of warranty).
Do you guys have any recommendation about a good warranty company and the ones that don't give you hassle when you file a claim.
Currently I drive 1997 C36, and I bought the best policy for the warranty from WarrantyDirect before my original warranty runs out.
I paid around $2200 and 0 deductible. (6 years /100K whichever comes first).
The only time they have to sent an adjuster is when my dealer claim for tranmision replacement , and the adjuster came to verfiy if the tranny indeed toasted. Other than that my service advisor never had problem filing warranty claim. And WarrantyDirect pays with their credit card.
I am glad I purchased that warranty otherwise I would have to shell out 3-4 times what I paid for the warranty itself.
If anyone has a good experience with certain warranty company with their M5, please share since at this point the maintenance cost nightmare could prevent me from go ahead with getting the M5 (uughh but I want this car bad :crying2: :crying2: :confused3 :confused3
