I was just about to replace my front lower fender liners - I'm talking about the left and right pieces that go right under the front bumper and mate to the center engine under-cover. The right side has the exterior temp sensor mounted in it. I cut brake duct holes in the ones I've got but one has gotten really cracked up so I wanted to get the Euro version with the holes already in them.
RealOEM has them at $109 each, street price seemed to be about $75 each for the longest time but now that I'm ready to buy the price has shot up north of $200 apiece. ECS wants $235 each! I asked my local indie what he could get them for and he came back with $209 and $216 and that's with the 10-15% discount he says he gets for parts.
To be clear, we're talking part # 51712694832 and 51712694899 - Lower left/right engine compartment cover with brake air channel
The non-air-duct versions ( 51712498989 and 51712498990) have also gone up to almost $200 each.
Guys, get used to it as this is the trend. Right now it seems to be plastics. I have a dealer account and saw this coming. I purchased every new one in stock for the old price, which was around $55 to me. Unfortunately, they only had 5 on hand. When BMW jacks the price, you should be able to buy anything that was already in stock at the original price. Most resellers will follow suit on pricing the same day but some will honor the previous price on old stock only.
Adam, I assume this pricing increase is happening to many other parts now (or soon) too? BMW has a history of ramping parts pricing, given they hold a monopoly on a lot of parts, during times of corporate stress. They milk the replacement market for funds and rarely, if ever, lower prices later. The last time was during the 2008-2009 period which saw large increases from BMWNA (i.e. price a flywheel from 2007 to 2009 for example). Now BMW is in the midst of a reset in their long term projections. Their stock is down more than 30%, China sales are imploding at a rapid clip, so since you have to "make the numbers" it's time once again to milk the parts monopoly market. Financialization rules.
Turner went up too... turner is not longer selling parts out of Mass either. Currently all shipping is from ECS. Sucks, because i need a passenger side one haha
Wow. The price trend on the fender liners has been stock market crazy lately. 2+ years ago they were in the $120's, then dipped down to $60-70, now this!? Dam.
Now, at what point will we see the factory reproduction era begin? Plastics (As stated above interior trim included) have become ridiculous this past year.
But for now... Don't damage your fender liners!
As far as plastics go, are they solely BMW production exclusive or is there an independent manufacturer (ie. suspension = Lemforder)?
You can still get OEM ones on eBay for a good price, I see that someone has picked up molding them, so we will always have them, just aftermarket and worse fitment I bet.
I ordered these from husker yesterday, guy said he's taking a huge loss for honoring the lower price (he didn't update his online pricing), so i got away with it
Same problems here. I ordered a right side from Eluka888 for $88 only to have my money returned with a note "Item no longer in stock" I then paid $99 to QEautoparts1 and got a fake tracking number, an apology and a refund at the same time they adjusted their prices to $260.
And they want you to believe there's no inflation or recession, time tobe yellin @ yellen, lol. On the positive side, this will make our M5 more valuable, yes?
Well, at least the fender liners on the car are, yes. You can always choose to live like the manipulated CPI data and use hedonic adjustments. When a BMW gets too expensive you substitute for a cheaper car -- see? No inflation! It's like magic.
I don't see anything wrong with a low cost option to the porkchops (provided they fit), seeing how often people seem to break them. I haven't had any such issues yet but if and when I do, I might give these a shot.
Thought I scored a right side OEM porkchop from one of my most trusted price competitive fast shipping ebay sources, The Parts container for 88 bucks last night. Pulled the trigger immediately only to wake up this morning with a full refund. Damn the luck.
I need these too, just started looking for them today and came across this thread. What's the verdict? Where's the best place to buy them? partsgeek.com wants $256 and $216 for right and left respectively. I replaced them 5 years ago and they're due to be replaced again -so badly broken up that the temperature sensor is hanging loose.
And Nate, why would you cover up the air duct holes (similarly, why would anyone order the version without the duct hole cutout)? I figure if BMW went through the trouble to put a cooling duct there for the brakes, why cover it up?
Murad Motors had some on ebay for $140 and $135 on Monday but jacked the price up to $181 on Tuesday before I could hit the Buy it Now button. Apparently they are NOS and he is capitalizing on our pain. He is well within his rights but I refuse to buy on principal. The search continues.
Well my 2 month old fender liners and bumper were shredded by smashing a raccoon last night at about 70mph. Bumper is ordered but damn these liners are gonna cost more than the bumper!! Will the other 5 series liners not fit at all? Or could they be tweaked a little to fit?
Sometimes they pop up on eBay for good prices, but I haven't found any vendors who haven't jacked the price up. I even messaged a few whose prices went from $90 to $260 overnight when I was about to buy. They said "not our fault, BMW raised the prices"
