I've found that 1400 rpm is about the best launch point, you get every such a little bit of spin and then your off. Anything over that and the tyres will spin, or worse the clutch will slip.

is there an optimum rev to launch the car? have experimented between 1000 and 1800 a few times, trying to minimise wheel spinning
Whats a realistic time for the M5? 12/12.5secs? or is that too optimistic?

haha yeah 12 and 12.5 is to optimistic, it's rated at 13.3 from factory with some good driving you can get that...other have done some really good runs down to i think 12.6 but that takes some great 60' times.
If your really good and have done it b4 than you can dip to the 12's stock if not be happy with anything close to 13.3...watch for axle hop and wheel spin. Squeeze out each gear. Remove little things is fine but not that big of deal, 1/4 tank of gas and lower tire pressure to around 15 to 20lbs.
I ran a 13.5 with other people in the car and 3/4 tank of gas so that was fun just injoy it.

You can also do a search this is well covered.
thanks guys, clutch isn't a problem (got a UUC). Just hope everything else is ok
13.3 in stock form.... cool think I'm going to aim for 13's, that should be a good time I'm happy with, any less
2000rpm worked best for me (stock clutch). Less and I bogged. More and the tires go up in smoke. If I had a UUC, I'd try higher (~3000) and ride the clutch to get going.
30-32psi in the rears worked best for me.
Everyone/thing is different, you gotta experiement. Expect high 13's for starters, then once you get things dialed in, you'll do better.
Good luck and let us know. Better yet, come back with pics!

Be careful with the above-mentioned thread, it's not an M5! (4500-4800 rpm launch)
Removing weight is also questionable. I'm not convinced that's the way to go with the traction-challenged M5. On street tires, my Vette was quicker with a passenger aboard.
Do a search on M5board.com for M5-specific advice.

Absolutely...this thread was about a supercharged Z3 3.0! However, many of the facets of the thread are very useful.

In stock form 13.0 is easily achievable with a 2001 and up M5. Motor Trend magazine showed 13.0 in tests conducted in 2001 and 2002. With good technique, 12.7 and 12.8 is achievable. Car and Driver tested the M5 at 13.2 in 2002.
The fastest guys on the board leave at 1800-2000 r.p.m.s which allows a sharper step into 2nd. Member ELEVENS has a lot of experience as do a couple of others. The concensus is at least 1800 r.p.m.s, but probably 2000 is better.
