Many S62 zero-oil consumers out there?

As title suggests I am interested to know if there are any other S62's out there that don't need topping up between changes.

Mine had the piston ring rebuild by BMW at 80k for excessive oil consumption and has never needed topping up in the 100k it has done since.

If this can be achieved then surely all S62's & S65's can be zero-oil consumers too.

My first trip after purchase was a long, full day's driving of nearly 700 miles. I went straight to the auto store to grab 5 litres of the stuff only to find it was still on maximum and that hasn't changed.

We're very fortunate it seems - what year is yours and did it get the updated piston rings? I'm assuming you're on TWS too.

The question should be "how long between top up?" I don't think anyone can honestly say their engine use 0 ml of oil. No engine in the world can do that. If you use all 840+ gallons of fuel between oil changes I imagine a quart or two will be consumed in most if not all S62's. Mine uses a very reasonable 1 quart/~3,300 miles.

Many probably change oil well before 840 gallons of fuel and may never need to top up because of it. Doesn't mean that no oil was consumed.

^^^^^I'm about the same. I was using TWS 10w-60, but switched to Liqui Moly 10W-60 for the last oil change. Consumption has been no different, oil change #2 for Liqui Moly this week.

November 2000 facelift and no noticeable decrease in the dipstick reading with 7500km TWS intervals.
But I rarely drive it like it was meant to be driven :laugh

September 2001 build date and now running Shell Helix Ultra 10W60. Nil measurable oil consumption.

In conversation with the previous owner, who ran it on Castrol TWS 10W60, he claimed it had "quite noticeable" oil consumption (no figures quoted). Maybe he drove it harder than me? (Though he certainly didn't seem the type to rev the nuts off the car).

mine haven't used any oil either, almost 1 year of ownership 3000miles. Liquimoly 10W60. I check every month to see the oil consumtion, still at the high mark when warm

no matter how hard i drive it with oil changes every 4500 to 5000 miles oil level is right where I filled her up too. And maybe a 1\4 of a liter at a track day

can you say your mechanic when he was working on the car did a good job lol

Mine is an 01 running on Liqui Moly GT1 10W-60 and does not use any oil.

Oddly, when I bought it and was driving home cross country the low oil warning came on after a few hundred miles. I had checked the oil before I bought it and could have sworn the level was just right. I really thought I was screwed and that it was burning masses of oil ... but I added 2 quarts (as I recall) and kept going. The car needed no more oil for the rest of the (2000 mile) journey :smile and no more since I get back. I think it had not been used much when I bought it which might have contributed towards the weird oil level issue.

Nice to see there are a few non-oil consumers here, even on the old piston rings.

Never Needs Topping Off

My 2001 (07/01 build) has been with me for almost 9 years, and is currently just past 133K. For 5 of those years, it was a daily driver; now I put about 4K miles on it a year. In all that time, I have never had to add oil between oil changes.

Also a 5/1 build. PO used 5w-30 or 5w-40, and never had to add any oil. I've yet to add any in 4k miles, running redline 5w-40.

I add maybe one or two quarts every year AT MOST...use lubro moly and it is awesome. Oil looks like olive oil. Chains look like clean steel. I guess I scored a gem that was pampered. I change my oil every 6k. Looks like olive oil... Take care of it and it will take care of you.

Be well E39ers,

Negligible to zero (0) liters consumed, since initiating ownership 32 months ago.

Background:
M5 has covered 21,2k km (13.2k miles) in 32 months, 4 oil changes with 10w-60.

Motor oil lubricant transitioned from Castrol TWS to Shell Helix Ultra 10w-60(post-Oct'13 formulation, increase in flash point 218C to 250C, TWS formulation 203C). Have BlackStone Lab Reports for oil services and other intervals.

Oil filter product transitioned from OEM BMW (Hengst supplier) to OEM Hengst (non-BMW-branded) to K&N synthetic filter media. Folds on filter media increased from 73 folds to 80 folds (e.g., OE Mann M5 filter has 59 folds).

Note: Oil filter brand, # of folds have no impact on consumption. For information purposes only.

My daily-driven July 2000 build (MY 2000) with 140k miles on the odometer burns zero oil between changes. I am using 5k mile change intervals using Liqui Moly Race Tech GT1 10W-60. I drive the car as it was designed to be driven and apply considerable care to warm it up before doing so, cool it down after doing so and proactively address any issues (or potential issues) that I find during my inspections. I can also turn-in a manually calculated combined mpg of just over 20.4mpg on my commute. Not bad.

I have never had to carry an extra quart of oil in any car that I've owned (and believe me when I say that is A LOT of cars haha). My wife's E70 35d with 80k miles also uses zero oil between changes (@ 5k mile intervals) and I am using the new Shell supplied TwinPower Turbo 5W30 oil. Previously, I used Castrol as BMW spec'd.

When I change the oil I put the level at the full mark and check it at every fuel fill-up - no change. Check it again before changing the oil - no change; still at the exact fill line I put it at.
