Hi,
I'm buying a 2001 M5 this week with 19k miles and am totally psyched about it. The one mod I'd like to make on this car is to put some after-market exhaust to get a little extra deep sound out of it.
I've been to beastpower.com and have heard the sounds - and like them all. But I'm not up for spending a grand on sound.
Do I have to get an after-market x-pipe? Can I leave the stock x-pipe in place and just get the new mufflers/tips? I guess I'm wondering how much benefit comes from the after-market x-pipe and how much comes from the mufflers. If it's mostly mufflers, I may try to save the dough and keep the stock x-pipe.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. If anyone has exhaust they're looking to sell, let me know.
Welcome to the board and congrats on your purchase. You are in for a ride!
As far as the exhaust goes, go with the aftermarket mufflers first as they will
contribute the majority of the difference in sound to stock. The x-pipe will
make the exhaust note deeper/louder/throatier, but you can do that afterwards if you decide that changing the mufflers wasn't enough for you. The x-pipe also saves some weight over the stock resonators. I have the Remus mufflers with the Supersprint X-pipe and am very happy with the combo...deep, throaty exhaust note with little droning while cruising on the fwy (which was a concern to me). Opinions on exhaust vary and are a choice that comes down to individual taste. Just listen to as many sound clips that you can or even better yet try to hear them in person.
There is a used dinan exhaust on sale on eBay right now with no reserve.
Just search "dinan m5 exhaust".
All of the exhausts sound great, it just comes down to preference...check out www.beastpower.com, you can hear all of the sound clips. I think the Kelleners and the Tubi sound the best.
Exhaust sounds really are a subjective thing. Some people like the throatier and louder sound of the Kellners, while others like the slightly more subdued and complex sound of the Tubi catback. One thing to remember is that all the exhaust will have a similar sound, when you get down to it. Some have more rasp, resonance, volume, etc. But, there all going to be hooked up to the same engine, which produces the same unique and wonderful noise. Ask yourself how loud of an exhaust you want. Have you ever heard the stock exhaust? If you have, and you find it to be way to quite, then Kellners, Dinan, or B&B Triflow may be the right exhaust for you. If you would rather have a increase in volume, but still be decently subdued, look at Tubi or Supersprint.
I've never heard a bad sounding exhaust on an M5, they all sound great. There are lots of different options, and the easiest way to decide is to narrow down the choices by deciding what you want from an exhaust.
