Nice touch !

I'm not living in the US and I've always wanted to know how your plates work guys. I've been many times in the States and I still cannot understand what is the rule !
I've seen cars with :
- numbers on the 2 plates (front and rear)
- number at front and "fantasy" plate at rear
- no plate at front and some kind of ad at rear
- no plate at all !!

Could someone explain me definitively how does it work ??? Is it a different policy for each state or regulated at a federal level ?

Thanks in advance

ICE: You are right - each state differs a bit. Most states have a standard format for license plates, but that format varies from state to state.

Most states have alternate formats for all kinds of purposes - commercial licenses, governmental, and special programs such as "Veteran of WWII" and the like. And most states offer a "personalized" plate program where you can have any combination of (usually) 7 characters as long as it isn't profane. In CA we have a few special character symbols over and above the numbers and letters, like a heart, a hand, and a star.

Some states also offer a choice of "backgrounds" - while the base color scheme is the same (and this also varies state by state), in CA you can get a background of the sierras or palm trees or a whale or other stuff - usually these are obtained when you make an additional contribution to a related environmental program.

As far as I know all states require a front and rear license plate, but some states are lax about the front one. The back one is more important because it is where the annual registration sticker goes to prove your car is currently registered.

I have seen some folks affix a european plate to the front with the state plate in the rear. I don't "get" this but who am I to judge.

I'll bet THAT was more than you wanted to know.
