hesitation 2k to 3k rpms

I often experience a little sluggishness between 1k to 2k rpms and some slight hesitation, or what seems to be loss of linear power, between 2k and 3.5k rpms. The condition is not dependent on engine temperature and seems to improve when in sport mode. Once I get above 4k things seem fine.

Through searches on the board, I've read some comments that faulty / dirty MAFS caused some degree of poor performance. Could this be it, or does bad MAFS cause poor performance throughout the entire range of rpm's?

BTW, it's a 2003 M5 with aprox 14k miles and the lack of linear power has been an issue for awhile.

Any suggestions so that I can direct the dealer are appreciated.

Thanks,
MJ

MJ, do you find that this happens with and without the Sport button depressed? I notice this as well with my 2001 (52k miles), but it seems to not be as noticable in Sport. Kevin

Probably asking the obvious, but do you have DSC turned on? I've found that it causes a bit of hesitation at those revs even if the yellow "DSC" light isn't flashing.

Cheers

Re: hesitation 2k to 3k rpms

The hesitation is not as noticeable with sport mode on, and i usually drive with DSC on. Also, the hesitaiton happens without DSC engaging (ie the light does not come on). It feels as if the rpms are increasing without a corresponding increase in power, but I must admit that it isn't always as noticeable. However, the car I drove at the M5 driving experience in NC was much more responsive, even without using the sport mode.

Re: hesitation 2k to 3k rpms

Mine does it only when it's very cold. I now let the car idle until the RPM drops to the 750 RPM steady state before I drive off. Seems to help that way.

CP- mine runs rougher when cold, but I discount that. I've heard the same from many m5 owners.

That's pretty common, it seems. I think BMW has the temperature enrichment map too lean, perhaps for emission reasons. A powerchip reprogram will fix that quite nicely.

Does the powerchip reprogram fix the cold temp hesitation (which I'm not all that concerned about) or the general acceleration performance? Can the dealer just change the temperature enrichment map without me purchasing a chip? Thanks!

It helped tremendously on mine. There is no "chip", the ECU is reprogrammed through the OBDII interface. If you run a board search, I think everyone who has upgraded to Powerchip is pleased. I just had them adjust mine for the header install, and the car is smoother still. Make sure you mention this board if you order, at one time they were giving a board discount, something like $100.
Dealer can't just enrich part of the ECU maps AFAIK. They can upload new and improved software that BMW gives them, but I am unaware of any programming ability on the part of any of the dealerships.
Regards,
Jerry
