Need unfortunate advice on how to sell my beast

I will be moving to take an expatriate assignment and will need to sell my beast. This is sadness since I've had it less than a year and have been waiting to be able to buy one for about 10 years.

Its a 2003 Titanium/black/aluminum interior with nav. Everything is stock except the $80 cupholder I bought (worth every penny). It has less than 26K miles and is in virtually flawless condition except one nick on the roof that happened yesterday. Its garaged and washed/zaino'd regularly.

I've heard carmax is pretty decent about rates, but I only have a few months before leaving and don't want to take a bath unloading this thing. It hurts enough that I have to sell it. I'm going to take it by carmax and the stealer in the next two days to see what they say.

I would appreciate any advice that you have - both on asking price and how to get maximum exposure. I apologize if this posting sounds like a car for sale ad, but I'm really just looking for advice at this point.

Regards,
E

Re: Need unfortunate advice on how to sell my beast

I recently sold my 2003 M3 to buy my M5 and my experience was most prices at places like autotrader and cars.com were very high. The other extreme is ebay where most reserves aren't met and if they are, the prices are pretty low.

Also worth noting that sites like edmunds.com typically is well over market especially if you describe the condition of your car as "excellent". KBB seemed to be more accurate (at least for the M3). To get a good sense of what the stealer will give you go to KBB trade in values and select "good" condition.

I used cars.com but I got the most serious "hits" from enthusiast sites like roadfly and e46fanatics. I'd imagine that this board would be one of the best places to list an M5.

Even though I priced my car very competitively (and it was perfect) it still took a couple of weeks to sell so be as patient as you can.

As a guess, you'd probably get upper 50's if you sell privately. Good luck.

E,
Take it with you

If you can't, then I agree with twells. Post it here, on roadfly, e46, the BMWCCA site, etc. You're bound to get better visibility from a group of enthusiasts than from those other sites...you might get more HITS from the other sites, but most are just looking...not really buying.

Good luck with the assignment!

Crap...I might just buy another one...

Just sold some property in AZ...for a large profit...about $100k in 8 months...

Let me know what you want for it...I need an extra set of OEM parts...

Just kidding!..My garage is full already.

Best of luck...actually, come to think of it...I know someone in SF who is looking and can afford it...

PM me with the details and how much you want for it and I will pass it on...
