I need some help w/ air flow meters

I think I may have gotten my Air Flow meters dirty. I recently got the Dinan CAI and MAF's and I never drive the car in the rain but lately I have had to and it has rained alot. I have been getting a Service Engine Soon light going on and off and the car is runing rich so I can tell there has been a fault and my BMW dealer checked it out and said there was a cam sensor fault and air flow meter fault. My Dinan dealer told me that is possible that I got the AFM's dirty bec. of the wet conditions that I have been driving in that I could have picked up some garbage in my air intake and with all the water and moisture it has most likely stuck to the AFM's. Has anyone had this problem and what is the best way to clean the meters.

Try a non film contact cleaner, you can get it from a eletronics store/hardware store. There was a question like this a few months back.

Re: I need some help w/ air flow meters

If you run K&N filters, they are known to contaminate the MAF's (Mass Air Flow Sensor).

Shouldn't the air filter catch "debris"?

Posts abound on how to clean them. It's an easy DIY project.

There is also an excellent post on how to replace the CPS's.

Good luck

Re: I need some help w/ air flow meters

Thunderbird:

How long ago did you have your Dinan CAI & MAFS installed? I ask this because, Sometime in within the last year, Dinan upgraded their install procedure, Parts and the location of the IATS. Do you have the Dinan Rain or Water Ducts behind your foglights?

If NOT ... You may want to go see your Dinan dealer and ask about upgrading ... I don't that Dinan has a charge for this ... You just need to call Dinan and discuss the problem with them.

I've had the Dinan CAI and MAFS for just shy of a year without incident. I also have the Dinan Water & Debris Protection Ducts which are located directly behind each of the Foglights.

Hope this helps.
