Thanks for all the feedback. My dealer offers an extended warranty from DFS. I am assuming they are all fairly equal, except for the price? Should they all be honored at any authorized BMW dealer? Is there actually a program that BMW recommends or is it at the dealer's discretion which company they use?

It also appears that the price that dealers charge for the extended full maintenance program varies. Has anyone purchased this in the $500 range on the west coast? I am assuming I can purchase it from any dealer. Can I also purchase the extended bumper to bumper warranty from any dealership via a telephone call or do they need to see the car in person.

Thanks again everyone.

GGarai,

Just curious, how much was the Warranty Gold extended warranty?

Later,
Kenneth

They're supposed to be the best independent warranty company (unlike MB, BMW doesnt have its own warranty), though there are 2 others I know of: DFS, offered by many BMW dealers and supposedly very good, but more expensive (732-287-5453, ask for Steve Portner). Also, AutoAdvantage (800-993-9190). Just be sure you plan to keep the car; many people buy these and then sell after 4-5 years. Also, be aware that like for managed care medical insurance, you must get "pre-authorization" before repair.

GGarai,

Do you think it is worthwhile to look around and obtain a warranty program from an out of state dealer to save several hundred dollars?

Or should I just purchase the DFS from my local dealer?

Thanks

BMW Certified is only for used cars sold by dealers as I understand it. The extended maintainance will only payoff if certain big maintainance (brakes or ?) is needed in the 365 days of the forth year, otherwise you lose if all you get is an oil change. You dont get to decide what needs to be done in the 4th year, just like you dont decide when they change your oil, you have to wait for the light or pay yourself. Can anyone shed a clearer light on this? I would love to know the best 7yr/100k extended warranty. Reputation, relationship with your favorite dealer, favorable fine print are all key. I would be nervous driving the M5 completely out of warranty, everything is so expensive, not to mention the big stuff, not to mention these cars beg to be driven harder than your average 5 series. Resale in 3,4,5th year has to be much easier/higher with a good looking extended warranty in place. Anymore info on price/quality of various warranties? A bumper to bumper warraanty wouldnt need much print would it? The big print giveth, the fine print taketh away.

I am assuming you are in search of an extended bumper to bumper warranty as well. Have you contacted many dealers detailing their programs? What prices have you been quoted?

Did you opt for the extended full maintenance? If so, how much did you pay for it? You are right that the fourth year is a gamble if all you get is an oil change. A BMW sales person was telling me that the brakes generally need to be replaced between 36,000 and 50,000 miles. That would make the fourth year appealing. However, this could also be a tactic for the dealer to sell the extended program. I think I will purchase it, but I want to get a fair price on it. According to the posts, the dealers charge a wide range of prices for it.

Sandy

I just took delivery of my beast yesterday. I was offered and bought the extended service warranty (extra year through BMW NA)and I was charged $399 for it.

I was not offered, nor was I told about the Platinum service "7yr/10,000 miles".

Mehdi,

Which dealership did you buy your car from? I would like to contact them to purchase the extended maintenance program from them if my dealer doesn't quote me a similar price. Are you considering getting an extended warranty? Thanks.

Guys,

Please do not mess things up.

1 extra year or up to 50,000 mile BMW Full Maintenance program for $399+
and
Extended (up to 100K miles) Warranty

are 2 different things.

Thx,

-Vas

Cerberus,

I bought the car from the Prestige BMW in NJ. I took delivery from Rasmussen BMW in Portland, OR.

The entire purchase and paperwork was done using phone calls and letters through Prestige by their excellent sales person, Lori Asserson... Yes, I bought the beast sight unseen.

Purchased my extended warranty at Hank Aaron BMW (7yr/100,000 mi) for $2195 with $100 deductible. The policy backer is Mark Nani & Associates (tel 770-663-7512). Also my sales rep David Smith was excellent in setting everything up (770-969-0755)

I anticipated permanent ownership of my '01 Jet Black/Caramel M5.
