Hope someone can help, I had this warning light come on, ahving recently replaced the front pads with no problems it had to be the rears, so when I checked it was indeed the rear brake pads. Changed the pads conected the sensor back up to the pad (cleaning all contacts whilst there), great, job done.
Started the car back up, but the warning light is still on. Do you have to clear this fault from memory somehow once the pads are replaced? if so, how? or is there something i've done wrong?
Had a scan through the search engine but have come up with no solution

The sensor works by getting worn through. Once the brake lining message comes up the sensor has to be replaced. It's a pretty cheap part and easy to do.

I have had the sensor short inside the cable (it's really two very fine wires inside the cable that activate the light if they touch each other from damaging the sensor cable or the tip wears thru at the pad end) and the cure is to replace the sensor cable in 15 minutes.

Stop by your local BMW parts counter on Monday morning and pick up one p/n 34-35-1-163-066 brake pad wear sensor. As others have mentioned, replacement is a 15 minute job.

there is a groove in the disc side of the sensor, is this supposed to be there or is it where the disc has come into contact and worn a groove, thought it looked a bit suspicious when re-fitting

There is supposed to be a raised bump, not a groove. So it's pretty obvious that the rotor has chewed through the sensor.
One helpful tip: there's a small metal clip that holds the sensor in the pad. It usually gets stuck in the pad.
If you are reusing your old sensor, it's important to retrieve this metal spring clip and reinstall it on the sensor before inserting into the new pad. Otherwise, the sensor will eventually work its way loose and fall out.
As you can see below, the clip is about 1/2" in length and easy to overlook.
Found out also, that you do have to reset the car by turning the ignition to the on (but not start) for 30 secs, turn off and then start. The warning light is now clear
