Does anyone know if either the 3 series or 5 series will follow the 7 series trend of dropping in price come the time their replacements are just arounf the corner?
I'm curious to see what a 540i with some rebates would cost...

Buying a car is not like buying a loaf of bread. It's negotiable... If a dealer has a 540i in stock and the color and options is to your liking make an offer $5,000 below list and see what happens.
If you order the car you cannot expect to do as well. I have never been moved by rebates and the like. If the economy slows for big ticket items, go in at the end of the month and try to make a deal. If you spot a car you like watch it for a few weeks, if still there, make an offer and let them know you've been watching it.
Never be afraid to walk away from a deal there's always another car down the road. If you're young you have a handicap. You youth and percieved inexpeience will cause you to pay more for a car. If you're stiff and walk at least they will have more respect for you.
If a dealer asked you how much payment you can afford tell him you'll get you own financing and do it on the internet. It's none of his business anyway.
Use the internet to research cars, prices and car buying techniques. Over a lifetime you can save hundreds of thousands of dollars. Enough to buy a house. As a matter of fact car buying is really more expensive than the capital cost of houses because of the depreciation in cars that houses don't seem to have.
Never tell a dealer everything you're thinking, a good salesman will use it to extract a higher price and add ons such as undercoating, "bulletproof" window tinting etc all of which is bullcrap. Stay away from the finance man and options guy for lack of a better term.
Focus on the car, the car, the car.
Good luck.
