I would certainly expect to MY 2001 added as it is the same (at least in design) as the MY 2002 and 2003. MYs 1999 and 2000 are of a completely different design. The next issue will be for those who have retro-fitted the post facelift steering wheels on their 1999 and 2000s.
I figured, when the same vintage 3 series were all recalled, we would be coming soon. I've been lucky so far with all my vehicles....that may be coming to an end. Thanks!!
It frustrates me so much how people have to get injured or loose their lives just so these recalls can happen. These foolish companies have no heart. The feds fining Takata $14,000.00 a day still isn't justice.
Give me a break. 33.8 million cars and 9 deaths. Do you know how many people died in WWII? You sound like a democrat housewife from the Bay Area.
I mourn for those poor folks who lost their lives, but frankly lawyers and the ambulance chaser mentality along with the media have corroded the American mindset and have caused more damage than airbags will. You think Takata purposely manufactuared faulty airbags?
It's all about the $$$. Companies weigh the options of these types of things all the time. In many cases it's cheaper to wait and see and then pay fines, etc. than it is to fix the problem on their own. Take the recent findings with Citi bank. They had enough cash in a fund designed for these type of things to just pay the fine and move on. It didn't hurt them at all.
I figured it was only a matter of time. 3 years ago, my next door neighbour was hit in his 540i head-on by a drunk driver. He suffered lacerations around his eye, and has undergone multiple surgeries to try to restore proper function. I told him he should talk to someone when the Takada thing first came to light, but he didn't really seem to be convinced. I told him yesterday that he should contact his lawyer.
I had been wondering why the 5-series wasn't included previously. Was it because it was safe, or simply because no one had reported any incidents yet. I know how this works, I've seen Fight Club...
My 2003 (09/02) falls under the production date range listed in the first post but when I check my vin on the website it lists zero open recalls for my vehicle. The site also say to check back periodically as it takes time to update specific vin #s so I'm not sure if I'm safe yet or just not yet listed on the site. Either way I have visions of some service tech marring my leather with his screwdrivers trying to pry the horn off or something. I'm sure it will have to be done a BMW service center. I'd be shocked if my M specialist is allowed to do it or would be shipped the parts but who knows.
I wish they would narrow this down to a PN/manufacture date. I have an updated wheel in my E39 and it is more than likely a problem as well. I don't really drive the car but would like to know I don't have a potential ticking time bomb sitting in front of me every time I get behind the wheel!
FWIW, I have 2 E39's that I need to have looked at.
My guess would be that if you could prove your LCI airbag to be under the affected production date (Like most BMW parts, I would expect there to be a Month / Year stamp on the airbag), then they should be able to replace it.
I also hate the idea of having to drop my car off at the dealer, even then I may have to explain why an E46 SMG wheel is in my car, while my airbag is original.
Not every Vin will get called. BMW uses many suppliers. There were three for steering wheel airbags when I last checked. That was for my 2000 car but I don't see why that would change. You guys will have to be patient and wait for the bad news.
Yes but by editing the post you added a whole new form of bad info. The air bags are the same even though the wheels are different. Just because the steering cap is different does not make the bag different. Besides they are not changing the bag just the actuator. At least that is what they did on the Company Fords we run.
Thanks, you all need to understand it is the actuator/inflator and that it is in tons of cars. Just look at the recall list. Not every car in the range will be effected because there are many suppliers of air bags even for the exact same car. The model range is just that a range. They know that some of the cars from here to here got those bags but the car behind in the production line might have gotten a different one from a different manufacturer.
I also have in the family two 3 series covered in the first recall neither were affected.
mines a 2/2002 production date so looks like I'm ok.
