I would really like your help on my M5 E39. I just bought the car from an auction (2003 160000km) when i got it i tried to start it and i could hear the starter crank 2 times and then nothing. I thought the starter was defekt but when i plugged in ISTA/D it showed "No connection" DME, DSC, and steering angle. I tried to reprogram DME with ISTA/P and now DME showed up but with all the possible faultcodes it can deliver..Meantime while this fault came up there is a beeping sound from glove compartment when ignition is on step 2 and "Failsafe program" showing on instrument cluster. The beeping beeps 5 times in a row and then pause 1 sec and so on...
And i forgot to mention that after first attempt to start i havent heard the starter crank anymore....
So the car is totally dead! Checked all connections DME, DSC, Ground points, fuses, relays etc etc... All ok
On auction they said the engine cranked and it did for 2 seconds when i tried.. But after that there is electrical fault
So thats was not really planned, if there was a mechanical fault i would have fixed it without any trouble but this CAN bus crap really bugs me..
And i wanted to bring the car back to life been standing for over 2 years....
You say you've checked ground, fuses and relays for the DME, have you checked the outputs to starter control? Pin D-40 to the starter. such a broad fault is difficult to diagnose without a little more information
Also this may be relevant or it may not, but the things you seem to have an issue with i.e. fuel, crank, DSC are all going to pin block D on the DME. May mean something or it may not
I would check the ignition switch on the steering column, cheap part to replace, I had starter issues, not as severe as yours I must admit, but a faulty ignition switch can cause all kinds of trouble.
^ Exactly.
I bought a similar car, had been sitting for over a year and would crank but not start. First thing I did was buy a new battery. I also had a CAN bus error when I tried to read codes. What seemed to fix that for me was to remove and test the main/DME relay. The relay was fine but I think pulling it and putting it back acted like a hard reset.
Now i have been digging into it even more..
The 5 beeps coming from fuseholder in glove compartment is the fuse for the DME, proberly because the DME2 cant even be reprogrammed with ISTA/P. I tried to do it again but program tells me to replace DME. And DSC, DME and LWS on the same BUS line cant be found with ISTA D
So i guess the temp gauges OIL and Watertemp goes to maximum, beeping sound from glove compartment, Failsafe program in cluster only means 1 thing------CHANGE DME and i really hope it will work after that.
Anybody knows if i can flash the eprom from a used DME?
Don't chase your tail. Are you dead-nuts certain your battery's sound? If not, remove battery from car and take it somewhere to have it fully tested and recharged if necessary. The battery is the heart of your car's electrical systems, so start there. Battery cables would be the next thing to check. Build your foundation and then work up from there.
Someone may have messed with the DME. You can typically recover it by unplugging power for a while and then trying to flash it back to stock using Galletto or WinKFP if you have access to those.
I would take a peek at the ebox and under the dash and also make sure no wires have been modified or tapped/cut. Things like the clutch switch and neutral switch can prevent a start also.
My head have been up behind in dash on both sides, unplugging, cleaning all possible connectors without finding anything wrong. What i found was moister under carpet on right side of the car, so the groundpoints were soaked in water.
For the flashingpart i can not read out dme at all. Does anybody have original files they can send to me maybe?
You can find original files in the coding section of either this or other BMW E39 boards. For the DME, try removing power for at least 10-15 min (from the DME itself by removing the connectors from it under the hood).
Water in the passenger footwell either means there is a sunroof or door leak or water got into the e-box and soaked into the cabin. I would check that carefully to be sure. It could have fried some fuses and relays in the process. Once you know all that is good, and reset the DME, you can try flashing it back if it will respond. If not, search for DUDMD and he can provide you with a virginized DME already flashed to the proper configuration for your car. He's on FB but also has his own site.
Thanks for the tip, i will dig into it. I also ordered a DME from Poland (virgin) so we will se how it works....
One question.... How do i make sure the CAN Bus is alright? Any special ways to check it?
Today i tried a second relay for DME and suddenly ISTA/D could communicate with DME, LWS and DSC again
So i tried to program DME once again but ISTA/P rejects DME2 and shuts down. And after that i did a diagnostic check again and not possible to communicate with DME.:eek
Dont you guys think it must be DME thats broken??
Found the beeping sound, on cable harness behind glovecompatment.
obviously it makes the buzzing sound cus there is no power to the DME. Connected som +12v on DME and it woke up, but beeping didnt stop
Does anybody know what powers the dme? All the way from the back (battery)
You got the wiring diagram system WDS? Sounds like you need it if you don't.
From that:
- battery supplies F100
- F100 supplies F109
- F109 supplies the DME relay and the fuse carrier -engine electronics..
