I was washing my car yesterday and noticed that the black plastic undertray below the passenger airdam was cracked. There was some sort of sensor dangling too.
I want to replace it and wondered how common this is (I figure I must have cracked it when I crossed an intersection quickly to find a dip on the other side and bottomed out).
Extremely easy to replace - a dealer will charge you too much for sure. It is a 15 minute job or less. The part you want is 51-71-2-498-990 - "lower engine cover right" - I got my last one from Pacific BMW for about $45 - list is $65. The thing dangling is the outside air temp sensor. You can shove it up inside to prevent damage until you get the new part - and see what the engine compartment temps are from the display on your dash.

Any estimate on cost? What is the sensor there?

Dear Mamsterla:
Was the damaged vehicle part you mentioned in your 8/23/04 thread the, "lower engine cover right" part Greg thought it might be and was it as easy to replace as he said it would be? Did you replace it? If so, did you yourself replace it or did you have the dealer or a mechanic replace it and at what cost parts and labor?
The lower area below my front airdam on the passenger side has worn through after years of scraping pavement as I exit my office underground garage driveway into the street and I'd like to be reassured before ordering part number 51-71-2-498-990. Come to think of it (and look at it) the same part on the drivers side is getting worn down too. (This spoiler part sits closest to the road directly below and behind your fog lamp but below the actual painted spoiler) Any comment people?

I have replaced both the left and right sides previously. It is very easy to do. I am uncertain as to the part numbers but Pacific BMW or any dealer for that matter can make certain the right part(s) are ordered.
The dealers call them "tomahawks", either left or right. Very simple, just need to get the car slightly elevated and a few screws/bolts with a socket. My front and left were each about $100. at the local Atlanta dealer.
Good luck.
