Gas problem
This is a very odd problem that I cannot figure out for the life of me. Over the past week I have been putting gas in as I usually do in the car but when I wake up the car says their is no gas with less than 5 miles to go before going dry, or gas is just missing in general. I thought maybe something is leaking but their is no gas on the garage floor. I don't know where to even start to think the problem is. The car runs and drives fine, but this problem is costing me a fortune! Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Gas problem
Either somebody else is driving your car or you have a thief in the area

Re: Gas problem
Haha, no nobody is driving the car, humm about the theif, I'm going to test that theory, I'm going to fill it up and surveilance the car all night..let's see what happens. But the only thing that is making me think its not that is gas isn't dissapearing from the other cars...it's worth a try!

Rather than staying up all night, why not just log the odometer mileage?

Re: Gas problem
Who has access to your keys? Maybe someone playing a practical joke on you? After a few weeks, maybe then they start putting in gas and make you think you're getting 200 miles a gallon?
Are they any signs your gas door lock is broken? If there is no gas on the floor or gas smell, then someone is either driving your car or siphoning out your gas.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Re: Gas problem
Ruffinit;
Can you confirm if you are in fact loosing the gas? By that I mean when you fill up does the tank take the gallons the gauge says are missing?
Second, I would consider checking the car's fuel system under load, you may have a gas leak which only shows up under higher fuel system pressure, in the garage you are usually at or near idle, and if it is a high pressure leak, it may not show up in those conditions. One thing you could try is park the car, and rev the engine giving it a lot of gas a few times and then check under the car.
Lastly I would attempt some aggressive take off, and down shift maneuvers, keep your eye in the rear view mirror, see if you notice an excessive amount of black smoke when you're into the throttle.
Lastly, do you have a 16-85 yo son with a preverbal sweet tooth for ///M Power?!
Best of luck finding the problem

Re: Gas problem
Haha, thanks for all the replies. The car is currently under vigilence at all times, so we'll see!
Audio: Unfortunately their is a preverbal sweet tooth running around the house at the age of 18, I am watching to see if he sneeks it out at night! But I am going to try those tricks tomorrow for sure.

Re: Gas problem
You also could activate the security code...it won't move then

Re: Gas problem
M5 has a gas problem? Stop feeding it mexican food before you put it in the garage at night...(sorry, someone had to make the horrible joke).
My Triumph did something similar, but it just turned out to be bad O2 sensors making the car run rich (didnt have a working gas gauge, so I had to go by mileage), and burn more gas. That wouldnt be your issue though.
I dont think it would be the 18 year old, as I was once a sneaky 18 year old myself. The trick is bring the car back with the amount of gas you took it with, and I am sure he would be smart enough to do that. Let us know what you find.
