Would you buy this 2000 M5?

As a loyal 2002 M5 I gave a buddy a ride in my 2002.. (ah.. probably at speed) ...

Anyway.. in the parking lot next to my buddy today was this 2000 M5 for sale. Locally owned and serviced. Here are the details...

2000 M5 - Immaculate Condition (except for a couple or rock chips)
One Owner - All documentation
Mileage = 52,500
Fully Optioned
Service Level #2 just completed by BMW
Here is the ringer.. I'm told it's a light powder blue in color... (??)

Asking price is under $39,000
Might need new tires....

My buddy is 'Jones-ing' for a M5 since he was in mine... but reallly doesn't want to buy in at the $50K+ level for an '02 or better.

Three questions...

What gives with the powder blue color.. haven't seen one of those before?
What would be a fair price if the car fully checks out at the dealer?
What other expense and exposure will he have with an M5 that is not covered by an extended warranty?

Thanks in advance for your answers.. Hope to add still another M5 driver to the MD/VA.DC area...

Bob

Bob,

The color is probably Silverstone; a standard (light metallic blue) which is not seen often, but certainly not objectionable. As far as the mileage goes, much depends on the service records. The owner should have them, but if not, any dealer can access the records, and most are willing to share them with a bonafide potential buyer (especially if they know they'll get your business). Beyond that, I would ALWAYS obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a highly regarded dealer. The price seems OK, if not a tad low, so any deferred maintenance costs could be negotiated. The BMW dealer Business Manager
can recommend (quality) companies that sell warranties. Be careful of aftermarket warranty companies, some aren't so good at paying on time, so a bit of homework is highly recommended. Bottom line: Go slowly and check it out carefully.

Pretty sure that is Silverstone.

I actually like that color - its different - you don't see it often - and it looks silver/blue depending on the light.

Re: Would you buy this 2000 M5?

There are certain known issues with model year 2000 cars that anyone who is considering such a purchase should be aware of. If you don't do your homework, you could end up like this poor guy.

In general, MY2000 cars have known issues with VANOS, A/C controllers, instrument cluster LED's, cam sensors, and wheel bearings, along with the usual E39M5 issues with weak clutches and going through tires and brakes quickly. The important point here is that a MY2000 can be a fantastic bargain, especially in the current market, but you must know what to look for. The smart shopper will pay less attention to mileage and more attention to service history. Find the right one, and it could take you all the way to 120K miles or more w/no issues. Get the wrong one, and you could be looking at thousands for repairs.

Hear is the entire thread where some board members talk about their MY2000 experiences.

Here is a thread on MY2000 cars after 50,000 miles:
What happens to the E39 M5 after 50,000 miles?

And finally, a shameless plug for my car (for sale), which I believe is a near-perfect example of a great bargain that has had all the MY2000 issues addressed, with the added bonus of being heavily modified into a super-beast .
