          Nav service mode menu & watching TV while driving

          Yesterday I got two interesting tips from a guy at a swedish BMW site (who got it from someone else). Maybe this is old news for you guys, but I found it rather amusing. I know the TV tip doesn't apply to you US people!

          1. Service mode menu

          If you have a MK2 Nav System (female voice), you can bring up a Service Mode Menu as following:

          * Set ignition to pos. II
          * go to "settings"
          * push the MENU button for at least 20 s

          The service menu has some TV, GPS Data and telematik options and info. For example it's possible to get GPS satellite status and your lat, long, altitude, speed and heading.

          2. Wathing TV while driving

          * Set ignition to pos. II
          * enter TV mode
          * enter "settings"
          * enter "contrast"
          * when the green contrast bar is visible, push the knob and keep it pressed
          * turn ignition off (keep button pressed!)
          * wait 8-10 seconds (timing must be accurate!)
          * release the knob
          * turn on ignition again
          * Now you can watch TV during driving

          To watch videotext use the same procesure as above, but chose "brightness" instead of "contrast"

          This works on all 5/7 Series with the Mk. I Navigation System (the one with the male voice). On Mk II (the
          newer version with the female voice) you have to use "brightness" instead of contrast for TV and "color"
          instead of brightness for videotext to get the trick to work.

          As far as I've heard it doesn't work on 2000 models or later. I've tried both tricks on my '99 and it works just fine!

          Apparently Eric (SVTWEB) has had a breakthrough in figuring out the TV retrofit..

          I wonder if any bmw dealers can do this?

          Seems easy enough...prolly charge an arm and leg for it?

          I don't think any BMW dealer in the US would touch this due to legal and BMWNA restrictions. Remember, us Americans are sue happy people. But check this site out. They appear to be working on a solution that will be ready in February.

          In fact, to be honest, I'd prefer this happen quietly enough that BMWNA not know too much about what's going on, as they might try to make parts availability troublesome.

          I have no particular interest in watching TV while underway, but it'd be nice to have it available while waiting for the wife to get her takeout wonton soup, and I can think of a ton of good uses for an aux input (anyone for a video Val 1 display?)

          During the weekend I've noticed two things:

          1. It's very hard to recieve a good TV signal while driving, but the sound is good.

          2. It's rather amusing to inspect the speed given from GPS and to compare it with the speedometer, until you realize that you are going 60 meters in one second without actually watching the road.....

          //Have fun but be careful out there!

          I have tried it on my 01 X5 and 00 328coupe and it doesnt work either.

          But I'll find a way.

          Why would you want to do that? If the TV was on when I was driving, it would be a matter of minutes before I got into in an accident!
