          Transporters for my M5

My car is supposed to be at the dealer toward the end of June. Dealer recommended Intercity lines which gave me a pretty good quote. A friend recommended DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers). Has anyone used either? The quote from DAS was significantly higher, almost triple! They mentioned that they will be the primary insurer. What do I need to know and ask for so that I don't have any "surprises?"

          Scott:

I used Innercity to ship an E55 that I purchased from a dealer in White Plains to my home in Dallas. They were great. Complete white glove inspection upon pick-up and and delivery. Arrived when they said they would and the vehicle was covered inside the covered trailer. I was very happy. The insurance was included in the price, but I didn't ask who provided the policy.

I used DAS for covered transport from NY to CA. They were cheaper than Intercity for me, probably because both the originating and receiving cities were very near their terminals (I think they only have 3 terminals nationwide). I saved $100 by picking up my M5 at their local terminal instead of having them deliver it to my house. They do local pickups and deliveries with a flatbed truck; only the cross-country part of the tip is covered. If you aren't near a terminal, they may well do the pickup/delivery with their covered truck, too.

Overall, I was pretty happy with their service. The car arrived really quickly; several days before I expected it. I found absolutely no damage of any sort. My only complaint was that it arrived very dusty, which was more of an annoyance than anything else.

The primary vs. secondary insurance is a good thing to ask about (primary is better because it pays for the damage directly, secondary just pays the deductable for your insurance). DAS boasts satellite tracking with a web tracking feature, but it turned out the web query would only say "In Transit" when the car was moving. I planned to call in to get a more detailed update on its position, but by the time I called they had delivered it already, so I can't comment on their ability to pinpoint the location of the car while it's in transit.
