SoCal cops don't like bimmers??

Got a speeding ticket yesterday - thank you very much. Yes, I must admit that I was going a bit (20 mph) over. What struck me as funny, though, is that I was surrounded by 3 other cars (VW Golf, Altima, and an old Mercedes) that were going the same speed. Somehow I was the "lucky" one that CHiP's finest decided to pull over.

As I started driving off, ticket in hand, it dawned on me that the similar thing happened last year on my way back from Vegas - train of cars, I was pulled over. Got me thinking about the thought process used by cops in deciding which of several speeding cars to pull over. Anyone have any ideas beyond 'he who has the most expensive car must have extra $$$ to pay for tickets', which is what I've concluded???

Same in Sweden, if a froup of cars that go similar speed they usually stop the one they think look nicest / fastest and that is always in my case a BMW.

Unless there is a suspicious or unsafe vehicle among that line of cars many cops will pull over the fastest or most expensive car in the group. They say red sports cars are the worst. Human nature.

By the way, do you have dark tinted windows? Somethimes tinted windows can cause more unwanted police stops.

Yes to the tinted windows, though I don't have a front license plate - which should make up for it, no?

Tinted windows and no front plate - you started with two strikes against you! Speeding was the third strike and you know how it goes: Three strikes and you're out.

I've been pulled over in similar situations before... the only difference was that I was at the tail end of a train of cars in the "passing lane." Sometimes I think it may be better to lead than to follow when going over the speed limit since the cop may have a hard time catching the lead car. Guess it all depends on the cop?!

I do have tinted windows as well...

It does depend on the cop. I've been in speeding "auto trains" that have been pulled over en-mass. The cop comes up and points you over and then goes to the next car and does the same until he's got everbody on the side of the road. It doen't happen very often here in the States, but I have seen it and a little too up close and personal, too.

Derek

PS - If the cop thinks you're tailgating or following too close then you're the one getting pulled over.

Re: SoCal cops don't like bimmers??

I got pulled over about 2 weeks after my purchase for not having plates on my car.

When she pulled me over, the "Lady officer" said: " I am pulling you over because you dont have any plates on the car..." I pointed to the temporary registration sticker stuck on the lower right corner of my windshield... and she had the guts to say: "I can still pull you over for that..." She then asked me to remove the sticker so she could take it to her car. I wondered why she just couldnt read it off... She then went on to question whether my angel eyes were stock or aftermarket, then after exhausting her interrogation, said: "Nice car by the way..." Talk about a bittersweet experience! I don't think theres any rhyme or reason cops follow when they pull people over.... They just do whatever they like.
