A little early....winter tires

I'm going to need winter tires for my car. I won't be driving the car much in the winter but I want to have tires for those days that are mild. So I want to find tires soon, hopefully not to expensive considering I won't be using them much.

I will be using the stock rims for winter.

Any ideas?

bump....same here though I will be driving in the snow. I'm leaning towards 17" rims maybe with Blizzaks from the Tire rack. I just have to make sure the wheels will clear the calipers because I will eventually do a front brake upgrade.

Re: A little early....winter tires

I am currecntly running the Dunlop Winter Sports on my stock M5 wheels in the winter up here in New England. They are ok, but not as good as some old 17 inch winter Nokian tires I have had in the past (Dunlop is the only tire that can fit stock M5 wheel though). If you are going to run 17s, I beleive you have to get the 540i sport wheel from 2002 as it clears all the large brake kits. The 18 inch Dunlops are fine for minimal use in the white stuff, but if you plan to drive in unplowed areas a couple of times, I would suggest getting the 17 inch wheels with Nokian Hakkapalietas(sp). Hope this helps.

Re: A little early....winter tires

I would stay away from the Blizzaks. I had them on my Audi, and while they did a good job in snow they were horrible otherwise. Really spongy and soft. Forget about anything over nominal hiway speed. And wet road handling was downright dangerous. That was the only setup where I could upset the audi and get all four wheels sliding in a turn.

I would recommend the Dunlop winter sports, they have been a great tire for two winters here in North NJ. I have them on 17" rims.

I run the Dunlops on 17" wheels on my car, too. They're great in the snow, and pretty good when there's no snow. This is the first set of snow tires I've ever had that I didn't hate when it wasn't snowing.
