Running out of Fuel!!!!!!!
Well, it happend today. OBC said I had 14 to go. I did not realize that it meant 14 feet and not miles. This happen to anyone else or am I the only lucky one? Could I have done any damage trying to get the car to move? It would go, buck wildly, and then stop. It made for a wonderful start to my day! Atop all this, the mother in law is in town to spend time with the baby. "you've got to see the baby.."

Here in Brazil the computer informs in KM.I tried once and when appears 4 km to finish i went to put some gas.The difference was 5 km more..Don't have any problems when you stops because the fuel finished. It happens when i had the old 540 and nothing happened.I bought gas and after two start the engine turned off.Go to the dealers and check if ther is any other different mesure. Why it was in feet and not in mls??In EUA it's in galolons and MPH am i right?

I had the same thing happen but have had no after affects some 5k miles later. Others warned of the possibility of burning out the fuel pump if you make this a habit because it is cooled by the fuel.

I have had the opposite thing happen to me.
For reasons I'll attribute to my complete hypnotic daze induced by proximity to the Beast, I allowed the gas tank to become completely empty (according to the OBC).
I drove for a good 5 miles with the OBC telling me I had 0 miles left in the tank.
If I'm not mistaken, it may have actually gone into the negative, but my memory on that isn't clear.
Just because it's digital doesn't mean it's accurate!

I think this happens because the OBC calculates remaining range by using the fuel economy average since the last time you reset it rather than reading the last few minutes of consumption. So, for example, you've been doing a lot of highway driving since the last set and your "average" is 17mpg, but now you're driving around in the city. If you have 1 gal. left, it would tell you you have 17 miles until empty, but really, you're getting 12 mpg in town, so after 12 miles or so....the car runs out of fuel. This could happen even earlier if you're pointing the car downhill since the pickups are probably near the rear of the tank. Moral of the story: don't run it down that low! And it's true that you could damage your fuel pump, as it is cooled by the fuel in the tank.

Boy, oh boy, it's not good to run your car to empty like that.
There are particles in your gas tank even though it's already been filterized. When you run it empty, those particles might get absorbed and may cause problems if you let that happen often.

not sure if the assumption is correct that the reserve light turns on at the moment you are down to your reserve, but page 187 of the M5 manual says fuel tank is 18.5 gallons, reserve 2.5 gallons
i actually suspect based on experience with both my 540 and the M5 that the light comes on a gallon or two before you ever hit your reserve. i usually fill up around 1/2, but the times i've forgotten or just couldn't top off, i seem to always have something like 4.5 to 5.5 gallons left when the reserve light comes on.
when my light comes on, my fillup only takes 13 to 14 gallons.
