I'm new to this board although I've been following it for a while. I have a 2000 M5 and was wondering if anyone would be able to help out with some advice. I recently put on the Tubi exhaust (BTW, Daniel from Beastpower was great to deal with!) and have been having some problems. So here's the story: it was put on last week and right afterwards when the car was turned on, the idle was not the same (sort of reving up and down from 600-1000rpm) for a minute or so and then went back to normal. Didn't think much of it and drove off. As the exhaust starting heating up, I started hearing a vibration coming from right underneath the rear air vents (in between the two front seats). When I turned the car on two days later the exhaust was quite loud and the idle thing was pretty bad but still went to normal after a usual minute or so. I still didn't think anything of it until that night when the SES light came on after some spirited driving. Ever since then, the idle thing has disappeared and now the cold start is not loud at all. The vibration thing is still happening though. It was my fault for not taking it to BMW specialists but I used a reputable shop that works on high end cars (Ferraris, turbos, etc) but my guess is they weren't familiar with M5's. I've read that the rattling/vibrations are from the tubi resonators hitting the cross plate underneath but when I took the car back to the shop so they could fix it, there seemed to be enough space. The other thing is that it just doesn't seem to be as loud as those first 2 days. I did put in K/N filter as well but I don't think that would do anything so... Can anyone guess as to what's going on? I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to have fault codes read but any advice someone has would be really appreciated.
Well, first off welcome to the board and congratulations on the Tubi exhaust. The K&N filters have been known to cause some SES lights with the mass airflow sensors on the M5 due to the heavy oil K&N uses coating the MAFS. I would first remove the K&N and go back to your original filter before fiddling with the exhaust as it is cheap and easy to do.
As far as the exhaust goes, sometimes when there is a leak in the system it will cause the O2 sensors to go out of their specified readings and bring up the SES. Check for leaks down the system (most notibly towards the front next to the cats and O2 sensors). The only place the system can really vibrate from is the cross member area or the differential. Does the vibration happen all the time, or just under certain situations? Hopefully, some more members with Tubi exhaust can chime in to give you some advice.
I'll go back to the OEM filters and see what happens. The vibration usually starts after 10-15 minutes of driving and only during acceleration. If l let off the gas, it stops.
Thanks again,
HA
Incidentally, has anyone from the So Cal area put on Tubi's and if so, would they be able to recommend a good shop to go to if necessary.
To check if you have any leaks on the exhausts sys....You need to out the car on the stand.....keep it running....then clsoe all 4 pipes with you hands....If there is any small holes...leaks....you hear it will start whistling....SH-h-h-h... ....
Welcome to the board. The following are things to note with the Tubi:
- When new, smoke will come from the Tubi tips for the first couple of hundred miles (this is normal).
- When new, a foul smell will come from the Tubi for the first couple of hundred miles (this is normal).
- When the engine is cold and in idling, the Tubi decible level is higher.
- The SES light can light-up if there are leaks due to non-welding or imperfect welding (we recommend a good quality TIG welder). However, clamping of the muffler section is normally fine.
- Rattles occur from the cross brace if the alignment is off.
- Rattles occur from the differential if the alignment is off.
- Rattles occur from the heat shield around the length of the Tubi if the alignment is significantly off.
- The Tubi comes with 6 stainless steel nuts to attach the 2 mufflers to the factory muffler mounting points/heat shields. This allows the Tubi to be adjusted for desired tip protrusion. Most other aftermarket exhausts come with these 6 nuts already welded to the mounting brackets.
That is pretty much it, so if none of above points apply, then the problem is almost certainly unrelated to the Tubi.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Brent,
'sup .
Cheers.

I had to get an adjustment on mine a few days after I had it installed. The car would sound fine for the first mile or so after a start.. then once it was settled in, I would get this deep deep grumbling with some reverb into the cabin. I knew it was hitting somewhere, but I also had the exhaust installers show me how much clearance there was above the crossmember so I didn't think it was that. It was making the noise in the same place that you are mentioning.. anyway, the installers took it back and in an hour everything was fine. I didn't get a chance to talk to them about exactly where the exhaust was hitting but when I look from the side, it appears that the silencers are pointing a little more upwards than they did on initial install. I think they dropped the frontal portion of the silencers because they were hitting something.
BUT.. the SES light came on last night.. I have an appointment to have it checked tomorrow morning, so we'll see. I had an SES the week before the Tubis were placed (they were installed two weeks ago) and it turned out to be a single misfire that they couldn't diagnose, so here's hoping that it's just the same thing..

Update: SES went off by itself today.. I guess I'll cancel the appointment and just take it only when I have the light on again..
It's at the dealer as we speak. Apparently the car completely lost power yesterday when the mechanic tried to go for a test drive. He said he barely made it back to the dealership, putt-putting along at 3mph! He said it was running lean with a bunch of fault codes, the details of which I haven't gotten yet. Anyway, he said it might be the mass air flow sensors or even possibly the ECU is going out. Aaaaaagh! But the warranty should cover either scenario. At least the exhaust had nothing to do with it but he didn't even get a chance to figure out what the rattling was from. More info later today (hopefully).
