Should I be concerned with purchasing a higher mileage 01?

Something close to 60k miles, single owner?

I see 2000's with far less miles, anywhere from 15-50k, so a 2001 with 60k miles seems high for most M5's. I have seen some over that, 70-80k miles, but the norm seems to be around 40-50k.

I remember asking previously about things to worry about with M5 and I think there were some common issues like burning oil, vanos units needing potential replacement.

One particular car I've found has a BMW CPO warranty good for another 2 years and up to 100k miles, but I'm trying to look past the 2 year mark (which would be hit before 100k milles). If I decided to keep this car 3-4 years, what could I expect to have to pay for in maintenance and potential repairs?

Is the engine like most BMW engines in that it is strong and will easily last past 100k miles? What about the drivetrain?

Lastly, what about re-sale? On autotrader, the highest mileage car I found was a 2000 with around 80k miles, going for around $37k. If I look at most 01's, with around 40-50k miles going for $45k'range, and compare to this 2000 and miles, can I assume that if I put on 15k miles a year on an 01, it would drop around $10k/yr maximum? Essentially, if I got a 2001, and tried to sell it in 2007 and it had 90k miles, do you think it would still have value enough to break even on the note?

Re: Should I be concerned with purchasing a higher mileage 01?

If the car is straight, the price is right and it is exactly what you want, I would not be too concerned. Usually most of the used M5's are lease returns and/or 1 owner trade ins that were fully service at dealerships anyways so they are usually well maintained. Just be careful if the price seems to good to be true, there are some scammers from Europe posting on Autotrader, and some may be salvaged or rebuilt.

I think the price will drop a little when the next gen M5 comes out, but M cars just hold their value very well as long as you keep your car clean and do your maintanence when needed. These motors are built to last well over 200K miles if you take care of the vehicile.

My 90 M3 has original motor and trans with 225,000 miles and runs strong still. Its all about making sure you do your maintenance.
I get offers on it all the time to sell it.

Some people have car out of warranty and they panic and think the car is too old and worthless and are ready to trade it in or get rid of it.

I paid $39K for my 00 M5 about 3 weeks ago It had 58,000 on it 1 owner, dealer maintained, etc.. . Originally the car was $49, then $44, then $42 and they sold at what they gave for trade in value which they said was $39K. I assume it was probably more like $35-$36K range since dealers never disclose the real truths about their actual costs and mark ups.

You should easily find a 1 owner 00-01 M5 with 40-60k miles for $35-$42 range from dealer or Private party.

Ltrz,
Woogie.

if they wholesale 2000's for 31-33k for high mileage ones and you got one cpo'd for 39k thats pretty good i think.

Re: Should I be concerned with purchasing a higher mileage 01?

Sound like a good deal.Late model high mileage cars generally good deals cause most of time probably been spent on highways where engine wear is minimal.BMW warranty an extra sweetener.BM motors are strong and you can get huge mileage out of them but you mustn't skimp on maintenance.

Cheers, Graeme
