Losing power over 6k rpm in 1st gear????

I've never really taken my car to red or orange line before. Tonight I decided it's time to drive her. Well, when I got just above 6k rpm...right about where the orange indicator light is, the power completely shut down. I could chirp it into second and continue normally. Has this happened to anyone else? Power loss somewhere between 6,200 and 6,700 rpm? Shouldn't the car continue to pull all the way into redline???? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Losing power over 6k rpm in 1st gear????

The tachometer has needle damping (like most gauges), and the rate of change of rpm in 1st at WOT results in tach needle position lag. When it looks like you're just getting a bit over 6k, you are already at redline. The rev limiter is kicking in, and that is what you are feeling as a power loss. (I'm guessing this is your situation anyway). It took me a while to get down just where to shift 1-2 in the M5 because of this issue. The higher gears don't exhibit this behavior as the needle's rate of change is slower. My V70R behaves exactly the same way, and I was fortunate to talk with Hans Nilsson (Volvo's R "guru") about it -- hence where I learned of this issue. I'm extrapolating what he told me to the M5 (he did mention that it is a common issue in other high performance cars).

Re: Losing power over 6k rpm in 1st gear????

A way to test if it is needle lag or if it is a true power loss to would to slowly wind the engine out to redline in first gear. Accelerate briskly but not at full throttle, and see if the problem still occurs. A slow run through the gears would answer that question.
Does it do it in other gears? If it doenst, then I think the dampened needle might have got the best of you.
