DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
Can you upgrade a Mk3 CD based sat nav to a Mk4 DVD based unit. Is it just a case of taking one out and replacing it with the new unit or do you require additional eqiupment?

It was a simple plug and play for me when i upgraded my mk2 nav to mk4. Unplug the old and plug in the new, all worked fine. (although on a mk 2 there is a little more to do, but still simple install)

Re: DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
The install may be relatively easy, but the cost for parts is well over 1,000 dollars.

Re: DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
Not from BMWNAV.com. I bought the DVD Nav drive for $775 through ebay.com which was the same fellow who runs BMWNAV.com. I got the NAV DVD Disc from him for $150 too.
It was VERY easy to install too....disconnect battery, take old unit out, plug in the new one, install the software and then I was up and running. Took me all of 30 minutes.

You can get a dvd nav drive from the dealer for somewhere between $1100 - 1800 depending on the dealer! or from the internet/ebay for around 1k. If i had a mk3, i probably wouldn't have changed it, but to me, it was worth upgrading my mk2.

Re: DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
What are the benefits of doing this if I may ask...sorry newbie.
I have a 2001 what mk is that? What does the DVD based give you? When you replace the unit or upgrade is it just the rear unit or the front also?

a 2001 would have a mk 3 system. the dvd system is a little faster, and you get the entire country on one disc. It also has some other point of interest features on it. You can search for stores, doctors etc by city. This is just the trunk mounted unit. I had the smaller nav screen, which i updated as well.

Re: DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
Jeff, the benefits are as Mike mentioned but I should also point out that I think the speed upgrade is MUCH improved over the Mark III version. There is virtually no lag when you use the knob.
Mike, did yours end up showing everything in "yards" instead of "feet" after you upgraded? Mine did after I installed the OS.

There is a very great improvement over mk 2, which was probably worse than mk3 in the knob push to execute time.
Yes, i'm in yards, with no accept screen. Not a problem to me, i'd rather not have the accept screen, and don't have bmw assist, nor do i need the emergency function. I'm surprised there's no option to have it in meters though (rather than yards).

Re: DVD SAT NAV UPGRADE
I'll have to double check on that..I could have sworn that there was an option to switch it to KM which in turn would change the yards to meters.
