I had an enjoyable father's day playing in the garage. I installed my UF motorsport IATS relocation kit, and ran some ducting from the foglamp area to the airboxes. I put the temp sensor in the intake to the pass side airbox. The car runs fine, doesn't really seem much different, but it was around 70 deg. F when i took a drive this am. After maybe 20 miles, i got the SES light. I got home and checked the code, and i get code 29, table 18 which is "mafs cyl 1-4". Now this is where the stock iats is located right? I'll go back and check my wiring connections, but could there be something else wrong with my work? If i was not getting a signal from the new iats, would the car be running ok?
Thanks for any tips.
Mike

Yet another reason why my procrastination is good! Sorry to hear about this, Mike. My IATS kit is still on a shelf in my garage, and now until I find out what happened to you, will stay that way for a while longer! Now that you've done the Dinan suspension with great results, however, I guess there's no reason to wait on that any longer (except convincing my wife). I figure if I can delay things long enough, your car/experiences can be my test mule!

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
I'm guessing something was wired wrong or there's something that is wrong with the MAF (doubt it). I have not heard of anyone getting an SES light after installing the IATS relocation kit.

I did back to back dyno's with and without the IATS installed and did get good increase with it in the brake duct. My installer did say that when he did the install the instructions left out a ground to the ecm that caused a check engine light, Which the engine was running way to rich. He referenced a bmw manual that showed the ground needed to be connected witch was done to correct the problem. The tech did mention that there has been several revsion changes to that harness starting in 2001, I have a early 2002.
Just some food for thought

I looked for the uf motorsport web site, i can't find a working link for them! I checked my connections, everything looks good. I reset the SES light so we'll see what happens. The install instructions are pretty straight forward, the wires in the dme were easy to find. One thing that did come up, the ufm instructions say there will be 3 connectors going into the dme, mine had five. After a search on this board, others have posted that they had 5 too, and used the third from the drivers side, which is also what the ufmotorsport instructions say. There it was, the blue/yellow wire in the correct pin # and the brown in it's correct pin number.
One question, would the car run normally if the iats was bad, lets say i got a bad sensor or something? I'll go drive the car a bit and see if that light comes back on. Again, it seems to run fine.

Thanks for the input 2003, i came across this too on a recent search to see if anyone has had problems like this before. I really don't see where this 'mystery ground' is, there are only 2 wires, and one is a ground (the brown wire, i believe). At any rate, i drove another 15 or so miles, no ses light, but my peak reader still refers me to table 18, code 19 which is airflow sensor, cyl 1-4. Interestingly, there is a different code for iats, which puzzles me a bit. I'd think i would get that code. I may try swapping the right and left mafs to see if the code goes to cyl 5-8, or stays at 1-4.
Still open to ideas though! I'm going to go recheck my wiring again.
Mike
I can give you the tech's name at north scottsdale bmw that figured out the ground problem with my car, He did mention the instructions were not that complete.

I may take you up on this Robert, i just don't see why it hasn't been an issue with others before. I went back in and rechecked all of my connections. I checked with an ohmmeter for resistance from the correct (per instructions) pin #22 and 17 to the connector at the new iats. The connections all seem good. The one thing that just doesn't seem right to me is that i'm getting and "airflow sensor cyl 1-4" code, not an iats code. Just for fun, i swapped my right and left side mafs. It's a longshot that a mafs went bad, but i figure if i did something wrong with the wiring, i should still get the same code. If the mafs is bad, i should get the code for cyl 5-8, then it's just a simple matter of a new mafs. If all else fails, i'll put it back to stock. Does anyone know what the correct resistance is for the iats? Maybe the sensor i have is bad?
What i've learned.... 1. always check for codes before doing any dme related mod. 2. do one mod at a time. (i added some ducting from my airbox ducts to the foglights, making a pseudo ram air intake. Maybe i'm getting some funny airflow that's confusing the mafs. If i still get a code, i may pull this out tonight). At any rate, it is mildly fun to troubleshoot... i'm getting some quality garage time...
Mike
For what it' worth, I installed mine per the UF instructions and have had no problems. I haven't seen posts of others with this relocation that have any problems either. My guess it's a coincidence and the SES code is generated from something else.
