Exclamation PS vs. hp

After reading some posts where people argue about different power ratings around the world I just wanted to clear up some confusion in this area.
In Germany and most other European countries power is measured in DIN PS (Pferde Stärken) whereas in the US power is measured in SAE hp (horse power).
The conversion is not 1:1 as many people assume: 100 DIN PS = 98.63201 SAE hp.

This means that the M5 with 400PS is rated to 394.528 hp in the US. It is the same engine!

And the new Bugatti that will get 1001PS is then ~987hp. Quite a difference on paper...

Ahhh thats interesting... I didnt know that. I thought some of the different ratings was because of the different regulations we have here in the US. So what about the new M3? why is it 343hp/ps? in Europe and 333hp here in the us? the conversion doesnt work here... its 10hp difference.

I don't know about the E46 M3, but maybe the US engine is slightly detuned to meet emissions or cope with the lower octane gas you have over there? Anybody knows?

B8 Guru: I may be wrong, but what I rememeber hearing at one point is that our gas isn't really of a lower octane, just measured on a different scale, just like P.S. and H.P., so I think our 93 is supposedly equivelent to your 98...But I'm not real sure on that one.

I believe the M3 HP difference is related to the catalytic converter placement. In the US, it must be nearer to the engine, or something like that.

Hi Jason,
Well I am not quite sure too, but as far as I know in the US octane is measured as (RON+MON)/2 whereas in Europe it is measured as either RON or MON? (I think it is RON)
My understanding was that your 93 is more similar to ours 95? Any experts on this topic out there?

Michael

For you techies out there, I found this article at encylopedia.com that helps explain some of the US octane stuff:
octane number

...not sure how octane's rated in Europe though.
