I recently bought the Autoenginuity ScanTool. However, I can't get it to connect to my 2000 M5. Has anyone had similar problems or is anyone using the tool successfully?
I had difficulties until I changed the port I was connecting with per the instructions. Also, the tool would not work with my USB port laptop and an adapter. I had to use a native serial port laptop, and even then the tool would disconnect frequently.
Check out the thread below for some useful info. In my case I can't get the Autoenginuity tool (PC version) to work with my M5 but it works OK with my other cars. They told me that it probably won't work with my car (although it appears that others get it to work) without the BMW enhanced interface package which is $229 on top of the base tool. I'm debating purchasing the package vs another tool to use just with the M5.

The windows PDA version did not work for me, so they gave me a PC version. They're still working on the PDA version to get it to work. I had problems with connectivity with the PC version, but finally got it to work by using a Belkin USB adapter => null cable => OBDII adapter. I tried every other cable options and they didn't work. Did you try using a null cable and the correct USB adapter? The null cable was the key.
Also, has anyone tried to return it? Mine seems to work so there's no reason to return it. However, I'd like to test it on a car with real problems to see if it really works.
Hopefully everyone else can get theirs to work as I'm curious to see everyone's results. Please save all the troubles by taking shortcuts with cables and just get a USB adapter that's known to work (IO Gear, Prolific, Belkin) + use a NULL cable. Thankfully as a geek, I have a few of these in a varity of standards. (serial, parallel, ethernet) So if I have troubles with mine, this will be the first thing I try, thanks!

Null modem. Great, I'm sure you'll get it to work and provide feedback on it.
Quick question. Being that I want to semi-permently install my Autoenginuity with my carputer, will the OBD-II vehicle interface be in my way while driving? I believe the port is under the dashboard left of the driver's left leg, correct?
