Anyone ever loose oil pressure from an oil change?

As some of you know I bought a 2000 M5 last week but I still haven't gone out to pick it up yet. Anyway, I had the original owner take it in for an oil change and final look over before I hand over the check. He called me back after the oil change, the mechanic changed the oil and when he finished the car wasn't getting any oil pressure and the car through a code and wouldn't start. So they flatbedded the car to the dealership and I still haven't heard anything about whats going on. These are the only details I have so far, I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone before or if anyone knows what would cause this?

Did they put 7 quarts of oil in or 8? The E39 M5 takes 7 quarts. It is possible, and I'm just speculating here, that if they put it 8 quarts (which is what most of the other current BMW engines need, the excess oil has blown a seal somewhere.

Just a guess...

Jeff

Although i'm not sure what the owners manual says (thought it said 6.9L), on my 00 M5, i need 7.5 Liters of the 10.60 to get up to the full mark on the dipstick, with the oil temp warm, after sitting for several minutes, when i change my own oil. This seems consistant with my dealer charging for 8 liters of the same stuff when it's in for the same. I suppose it depends on how long you let the oil drain, it can trickle out for nearly 45 minutes if you let it go until it stops completely.

Yes, the manual states 6.9 liters (which is 7.29 quarts) for an oil change with new filter.

So lets say they just over filled the oil and it blew a seal, how serious is that and how much would it cost to repair it?

I don't think overfilling the crankcase slightly would cause something like this, personally. I wonder if the 'mechanic' forgot to put oil in? That's mess up the vanos and cause the codes.

Not sure...and I'm not even sure it's a plausible explanation for your problem. I was only guessing about what could happen during an oil change that could cause a problem.

I would imagine that if you did blow a seal, you would have other probs also.

It's also possible that the sensor is bad. At any rate, have BMW scope it out for you.

Another possibility, and again, I can't say for sure, but did they use the right filter? Seems unlikely to me.

It is very hard to screw up with regards to the filter as well since most of the BMWs use the same filter. Please keep us updated on what the culprit was.
