Cam sensor repair

I got the SES light on and off for a few days. Took the car in on a Saturday with no appointment. Within 5 minutes, I was advised of a free recall (airbag update?) and within 10 more minutes I was diagnosed with cam sensor problems. Being fixed as I write, will be done today. Even with the problem, car seemed to drive OK. Can't say enough about my local dealer, Braman BMW.
Regards,
Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Did you manage to find out what diag code it came up with?? Do you know how many hours labour time the dealer has quoted to change the sensor?

sorry for the q's, just that I think my car has the same prob, hence would like to get an idea for how much its gonna cost me

Thanks

Tin

I don't know the fault code, but after the repair, WOW, it is like a different car. I have no idea how long this has been bad, but the car feels like it had 40 hp added!! I scared myself a couple of times on my normal driving test loop. I am definitely going to have to recalibrate my buttometer!!
No info on my repair order, it was a warranty item. I will supply all the different #'s to see if any help.
P/N's 12-12-1-438-082 Camshaft pulse generator
12-14-1-748-398 O-ring
1212119600 replace pulse generator on inlet camshaft (bank 2)
28628 clear fault code for SES warning
46 WBB 0.04
Not sure what all the extra numbers mean, but I hope this helps.

Jerry

Forgot to add, SA said it would take about 2.5 hours including time for the engine to cool down. I dropped it off around 8:30 am and it was washed and waiting at 12:30 pm. Obviously they had the parts in stock.

Jerry

Jerry:

Two questions: 1. Eduardo?
2. Was the SES light on when you took it in?

Yes, it was Eduardo. I showed up without an appointment just to get the codes read. The SES had been on and off for a few days; it was on for the last two days and was on when I showed up. What is surprising is this must have been bad for a while, but no codes showed up until this week.

Jerry

Re: Cam sensor repair

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what's is a cam sensor? Is it the same thing as the sensor everyone likes to move, called the IATS kit, or something? HOw do you know the sensors gone? Does the light go on? I'm asking this because my car is showing lack of power and I'm just looking for all the possibilities. Thanks

I don't believe so... the one that people like to move around is the MASS Air Flos sensor (MAF)...

The exhaust camshaft position sensor (pulse generator) itself is listed at ~ $94. Depending on dealers and CCA discounts you can get it slightly cheaper (I bought mine for ~80). The O-ring is ~$1-2.

Replacing the camshaft sensor is not very difficult to do. I would estimate only 30 minutes if you knew what you were doing. The exhaust (and intake) camshaft position sensor is location on the rear of the engine block (one on each side). The sensor for the cylinders 1-4 (left side of engine when facing the front of the car) is fairly easy to replace. The sensor on the right side is much more difficult (you need tiny hands).

The sensor itself is only held in place by one screw. You'll have to remove the airduct from the air filter box to the firewall to gain access to the sensor. Removing it is fairly easy but putting it back on can be a bit frustrating. It requires twisting and pushing down a bit to get it to lock in place.

I'm going to be doing the actual replacement later this week. I'll be sure to post instructions and pictures of the process.

Re: Cam sensor repair

Hi guys,

My SES light has been on and off for a while. Got it checked out and sure enough it needs cam sensor on bank 1 (where my VANOS was repaired under an out of warranty goodwill repair) and an 02 sensor.

Trying to get the dealer to replace as part of the vanos job they did a couple of months ago, but if not, i'll either pay up or buy the parts and get my local mechanic to do it (family).

Did u ever get those instructions?

Symptoms are intermittent....sometimes noisier hollow sound on acceleration, no noticable power loss.....

cheers
foxy
