M5 Shifter Boot - are they always conected to the shift knob?

I was wondering if the M5 OEM shift knob comes attached to the shifter boot, or whether the boot is separate from the knob? My 2000 M5 has a separate boot and knob.

Cheers.

Re: M5 Shifter Boot - are they always conected to the shift knob?

I know the '03 M5 shifter/leather boot is all one piece..

Had the plastic shift pattern cap pop off of my '03...

Wife said superglue it...lol...instead took it in &
Was told by BMW S. Bay that could not re-attach cap would have to replace complete unit, as it is all one piece.. Ordered unit, waited two weeks, finally arrived..took beast back in...unit ordered was wrong color...

Yep, they wound up re-attaching (glueing) cap back on original shifter...

Looks like it (shifter & boot) pulls off, has small wire connector extending out the bottom for backlit cap.. 3 (very bright w/o the cap) red led's formed in a triangular pattern are under the cap on the top of the shifter....

With all that knowledge & $2.50, it's good to know that..
we can get a cup of coffee anywhere..

Hope it helps..

On my 01 LMB the shifter boot is attached to the cap.
Just more insight on a different year car.

On my 2000 M5 the boot is separate from the knob as well.

Re: M5 Shifter Boot - are they always conected to the shift knob?

I think all E39 prior to 2001 had seperate shift knobs and boots while all later models had one single attached piece. I know this is the case for the M5 and am assuming it is the case for other E39 manual autos.

I guess I originally had a separate shift knob and boot. However, when the "aluminum" shift knob was flaking, they replaced it with a black leather shift knob. This new shifter includes the boot.

Re: M5 Shifter Boot - are they always conected to the shift knob?

Does anyone know the part number for the boot only? I just purchase a shift knob from ACS but since I have a 2003 the knob is connected to the boot. i was looking at this place call Leatherz, which I'm sure some board members have checked out already. I'm in the process of ordering an caramel alcantara boot and e-brake boot to match my car. If anyone needs the url :

www.leatherz.com

P.S. Thanks Daniel for posting this thread

Re: M5 Shifter Boot - are they always conected to the shift knob?

there seems to be quite a bit of variability here. My 00 car (6/00 production) has it's orginal aluminum look knob, with an attatched leather boot. One piece on mine.

Mike

My boot and knob are separate, and I have a 2000 (production 11/99). This is interesing information, as it unveils another change that was made to the e39 M5 during its production.

Cheers.
