Yes, and then BMW marketing changed the wording and kept the acronym.
Just like when TWA (Trans West Airlines) became TWA (Trans World Airlines).

This is a great thread, but I have a question for all you E39 M5-o-philes: what are the "automotive and engineering firsts" that are exemplified within the E39 M5? What's more, why should the E39 M5 go down in automotive history (or should it?)?

And I was there!!!!!! Even managed to sit (after long discussion) in the first one that was on the BMW stand behind all the fencing in the Salon de Geneve in 98. In my mind I wanted one so badly.

My M5 is listed as a 98' I am sure of it. I have asked this question before but have been told otherwise, but BMW are convinced its a 98'.

Usually determined by VIN number. Usually one digit (10th??) identifies the year. Remember, if the car was built after summer of 98, it is considered a '99. '99 was the first year for U.S/North American production, I believe '98 ROW.
