G'day guys - appears that I may have found "it"; as in the low mileage, used 2002 carbon/caramel with fold downs, luxury, etc. In this case it's a long distance dealer transaction & they have no idea about the M Audio upgrade (which is scary I realize , so, I asked for a few pics of the trunk & I think we're "not" talking about those 2 protruding subs here..... Can you guys confirm? ( thanks ) (break it to me gently)

I dont think it has the M Audio though. I'm sorry It wouldn't take more than a little bit of money to get some subs in there though. Plus, I hear that M Audio isn't much of an improvement over the non M Audio audio system. I was even thinking of swapping my subs out for something aftermarket.

You need to checkout the Navigation systems screen ... If you have the option of DSP within that screen ... then it has M-Audio ... If not ... THen not.
By the looks of the trunk area ... I does NOT have M-Audio.
Vics ... Whether this car has M-Audio or not ... That should NOT be the deciding factor whether you buy this Beast.
Does it have a "Complete" servicing history?
What warranty work, if any, has this car had done to it?
What type of warranty remains with the car?
HOW MUCH is the ASKING PRICE?
Is the Navigation system DVD Based?
You say low miles ... How much is "LOW"??
Are you buying this from a BMW dealership (cpo'd) or from Private Party?
Is the car being sold by the original owner and why is he selling it?
What other mods does the car have besides wheels?
Where are the original M5 Wheels and do they come with the car?
Have you looked at the car when it was up on a rack to see it's under belly??
These are the type of that "I" would be looking at and for ... IF ... I was contemplating buying a used M5 ... Not whether it had M-Audio.

I'm pretty sure DSP and M- Audio are two different, separate things. All M5's (in the US anyway) have DSP, correct? My 00 M5 has DSP,. but does not have M audio, and my trunk area looks like the one in the pic...

1) All M5's of recent vintage have the DSP audio menu in the navigation.
and
2) That particular car does not have the M-Audio option. The box you see contains two small 5" woofers ported through the rear package shelf. Made by Nokia.
But I disagree that it is easy to add subwoofers. At least not easy to do it right.

i'm one of the few who thinks m-audio is worth it. If you don't mess with the DSP settings its similar to the regular system but when you hit the reverb and crank the bass to full blast it does pack a nice static free boom that actually vibrates the seats aplenty.. not exactly helpful for classical music lovers and the like- Main downside is the space the subs take up in the trunk.
I for one, am not completely sure about all the details of M5 Audio. I know that M Audio was not available on 00' models. I have seen a 00' M5 with that sort of enclosure without M Audio, but was also told that cars with M Audio have come with that enclosure. I realize this is all very complicated, so what I would suggest is having the dealership take off the enclosure and look for two subs. If they can't do that I would walk away from them, the fact that they don't know what even is scares me!
rather than disassembling the car, take the vin to a bmw dealership., They can print out the car's equipment, owner, and service history!

The car does not have M-audio option but will have DSP. The stock M5 audio system is basically the same as the regular E39 5-Series upgraded audio system.

Norm
