Took the car to the dealer this weekend because of a check engine light...the computer reported "89 trips or code violations" due to the Rt. Bank VANOS pack. The dealer plans to replace both VANOS packs. Is this o.k.? What's the history on these "packs"? The dealer said he had done quite a few M5's, especially the early 2001 models (which mine is a very early 01). Is this a simple fix, or is something else about to go wrong? Thanks.

If your dealer is replacing both then lucky you.
No problems here as long as it's a warranty job. I've had both banks changed, but you may find that there are a few other faults that need other items replaced....just let your dealer deal with it.
Yes, this is very common on all early model M5s. As long as it is under warranty there are no problems. If it is not, the cost would be extrememly high as the parts are expensive and the labor is intensive. You will notive a drastic reduction in regards to the dieseling noise that is found in the M5 also.

If they replace both Vanos units under warranty, be happy, and when they are done give your SA something nice!

Thanks for the information. I have noticed an unusual sound at idle and its gotten worse over the last week and the car seemed to have hesitation at idle too....sounds like this will fix it. He is planning on replacing both of them, so it sounds like I'll be set!
interestingly, my car makes more dieseling type noise at idle with a new vanos, than with the old. Maybe my other one is going out.....

I just got the car back today and all is great! What a difference. The car does run much smoother...even sounds different. Shifts seem smoother too....not sure why....maybe psychological!
Glad to see you are happy with the outcome. My car did not feel any different after the VANOS upgrade, just quieter. I no longer sound like a truck stacking on a cold day at a stop light.
