new member - a few qs on E39

I am looking to get an M5 in the near future.

I would like to know how many miles I will be able to get between fill ups, and how much is a fill-up likely to cost in the UK - should one use super unleaded.

What will my service intervals be?

What are the best tyres for M5s?

Hey HarryG,

Michelin Pilot sport, and the highest octane available at the pump.

The rest doesn't matter.

Re: new member - a few qs on E39

I average about 18 mpg which is probably better than most since I do a lot of highway driving. More aggressive/city driving will result in around 14 mpg. I think the tank volume is 18.5 gallons. So you are looking at a range of about 260 to 330 miles (assuming you use every drop). At about $2.00/gallon, it costs me about $36 US to fill up. Of course, UK prices are different.

The service intervals are about 15,000 miles but many owners change oil more frequently.

My recommendation for tires is the Michelin Pilot Sports or the Bridgestone S03 Pole Positions.

Fuel consumption - I am getting 21.5mpg from a mix of driving, on a long run at a steady non-license losing speed of 80mph that should be a bit better. Fill-ups for me normally every 250-300 miles.

I use Shell Optimax and have always done because it suits the car better, locally I pay 81.9p a litre but filled up a few days ago in Cheltenham, Glos. and it was 'only' 77.9p. A full tank (70lt capacity) should cost between £54-57

1st oil service was at about 14,500, currently have 3 green lights left on 25,000 miles so Inspection I should be 30k+

I have Dunlop SP9000 on the rear, just replaced at £496 fitted and Dunlop 8080 on the front.

The earlier M5's are a bit partial to oil but mine (Mar '02) uses very little.

Re: new member - a few qs on E39

thankyou m5 uk. others seem to think pilot sports are the best.... i had those on my s4 and they lasted for ages.

A little disappointed with M5s range - that was the problem with my s4. Whizzing past cars on the peage and then watching them go past when filling up...... v annoying.

We can't get optimax in Guernsey but will put in highest RON poss.

I wonder if new M5 will be better?? the critics aren't giving the E60 chassis as good reviews as the E39.

Harry, just consider the "fill-up" time as a great opportunity to admire the E39 M5 from the outside.

Regards,

Terk.

Re: new member - a few qs on E39

Highway cruising at semi legal speeds (80-85) I easily get 350 miles and the computer says over 400. (average mpg per computer was 21.5, actual worked out to 21.1). I have already put over 18.5 gallons in the tank and I was still in the middle of the yellow reserve, so we must have a pretty big filler tube!!
Regards,
Jerry

****...my car must be some kind of wonder car....

I get 21mpg in the city. I just went on a trip to visit my parents and averaged 30.1 mpg on the hwy. I had the cruise set at 80 and did a 'few' spirited runs (up to 160). I had over 400 miles on the tank when the orange light came on. I didn't see how many miles I could go till it said zero but I filled up the next time I went out.

Re: new member - a few qs on E39

Hey Harry,

Something to consider. If you are changing the wheels.

The front stock rim is only 8 inch whilst the rear is 9.5 inches.

Front tire 245/40/18 and rear 275/35/18 thus the Beast is a big understeering pig.

If you are changing rims, its a good time to put wider ones on the front.

I run Dinan wheels. The rear is the same 9.5 but the front is 1 inch wider at 9 inches.

That way I run 265/35/18's Michelin's up front and the stock size 275/35/18 in the rear.

No Spacers and no rubbing and no tramlining. Just improved handling and a more neutral feel.

Just thought I would add this, as most beast come with Dunlops. If you are buying new tyres anyway, its a got opportunity to increase width of tyre and rim.
