Adding MODS to your car and warranty being possibly affected................

There's been a lot of talk lately about our cars BMW warranty becoming voided due to the addition of certain or various parts/modification. There has been some mention that Dinan's warranty/coverage guarantee is no better or no different than other companies or manufacturers guarentee, regarding their product for the M5 car. Well, if that's the case, then why doesn't these other companies post it on their web site or in writing, as DINAN does on their web site. Its in black and white. Here is what the Dinan guarentee states:

START OF QUOTE,
Product support is another important aspect of the Dinan philosophy since we insist on equaling the after-sale service and support that BMW owners expect.

With that in mind, we offer the best warranty available anywhere.

Dinan's warranty matches whatever period remains on the individual New Vehicle Limited Warranty for up to 4 years or 50,000 miles. Exceptions are turbocharged, supercharged or stroker engines for which a Dinan Drivetrain Warranty is available.

Our current 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty applies to products installed on those vehicles no longer covered by the manufacturer's New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

And the installation of Dinan products will not affect your new car warranty coverage. So you are covered mile to mile, year to year and bumper to bumper

The Dinan Warranty
July, 2002

We consider our warranty to be a very important component of each Dinan Performance Product and we want you to understand it. Dinan's objective is to enhance the enthusiast's driving experience by designing and manufacturing the best performing and highest quality automotive products possible. Our warranty is intended to cover Dinan products when they are used in the manner for which they were originally designed. Like any manufacturer, we cannot be responsible when our products are subjected to misuse, improper installation, misapplication, modification or neglect.

For Cars Covered by the Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty
US and Canadian Specification Vehicles
If your vehicle is currently covered by the vehicle manufacturer's new car limited warranty, Dinan products are warranted for the remaining term of the vehicle manufacturer's new car limited warranty, up to 4 years or 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers in Canada), whichever occurs first. Dinan's warranties are transferable when ownership of the vehicle into which the Dinan products were originally installed is sold.

To obtain service under this warranty, the vehicle must be brought, upon discovery of a defect in material and workmanship, to the workshop of any Dinan Authorized Center, during normal business hours. The authorized Center will, without charge for parts or labor, either repair or replace the defective Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer's parts using new or authorized remanufactured parts. The decision to repair or replace said parts is solely the prerogative of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. Parts for which replacements are supplied become the property of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. In all cases, a reasonable period of time must be allowed for warranty repairs to be completed after the vehicle is received by the Center.

For Cars No Longer Covered by the Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty
Dinan Performance Products are warranted for a 2-year, unlimited mileage period from the date of original purchase. Dinan's warranties are transferable when ownership of the vehicle into which the Dinan products were originally installed is sold.

In the event of a warranty claim, Dinan will repair or replace, at its sole discretion, any defective Dinan component upon receipt of the item and proof of the original purchase date. Labor charges associated with the repair or replacement of a Dinan component will be reimbursed at the Dinan Authorized Center's standard hourly rate, based upon the original vehicle manufacturer's and/or Dinan's schedule of flat rate labor times. Dinan will not accept responsibility for consequential effects or damage to any other component or system. The defective component must be returned to Dinan for verification of the defect before any reimbursement will be made. A reasonable period of time must be allowed for warranty replacement, shipping and/or repairs to be completed after the product or vehicle is received.

Dinan's product warranty specifically excludes:
•return shipping charges, •towing charges, •damage to a component or assembly due to the installation of replacement parts with specifications that differ in any material respect from the original vehicle manufacturer’s or Dinan parts, •damage resulting from the unauthorized modification of a Dinan part or assembly, •damage resulting from the use of other manufacturer’s products in conjunction with Dinan products or systems, •damage to the clutch due to power shifting or abuse, •brake rotor warp, •friction materials, •maintenance services and parts when replaced during maintenance such as spark plugs, lubricants, fluids, engine tune-up parts, replacement of filters, coolant and refrigerant, •mechanical adjustments or repairs which result from normal wear and tear, •drive-belts, •light bulbs, •damage due to the failure to perform maintenance services at the specified intervals or in accordance with the instructions in the owner’s manual from the original vehicle manufacturer or Dinan’s product instructions, •damage attributable to negligence, improper installation, improper treatment or treatment contrary to the instructions in the owner’s manual from the original vehicle manufacturer or Dinan’s product instructions, •engine damage resulting from altered boost pressure, •damage resulting from the use of improper or contaminated fuel, •damage occurring through corrosion resulting from weak or improper coolant, •damage to a Dinan component as a result of a collision or improper collision damage repairs, •any vehicle operated in any competitive event, •custom-designed competition parts, •incidental and/or consequential damages, including loss of time, inconvenience or loss of the use of the vehicle, •damage resulting from environmental influences, flood, accident, fire damage, or road salt corrosion.

The installation of some Dinan Performance Products and systems may affect the vehicle manufacturer's new car limited warranty. The vehicle manufacturer's new car limited warranty may not apply to modifications of the vehicle or installation of any performance accessories or components attached to the vehicle which substantially alter the original engineering and/or operating specifications or which result in damage to the other original components. Examples of Dinan products and systems which would likely void some aspects of the vehicle manufacturer's new car limited warranty are Forced Induction Systems (Superchargers and Turbochargers) and Stroker Engines.

This warranty shall be null and void if the vehicle identification number has been altered or cannot be read, if the odometer has been replaced or altered and the true mileage cannot be determined, if the vehicle has been declared a total loss or sold for salvage purposes, or if the vehicle has been used in any competitive event.

General
These warranties give you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights, which vary, from state to state.

The duration of any implied warranties, including the implied warranty of merchantability, is limited to the duration of the express warranties herein. Dinan hereby excludes incidental and consequential damages, including loss of time, inconvenience, or loss of the use of the vehicle, for any breach of any express or implied warranty, including the implied warranty of merchantability, applicable to the product.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations and exclusions may not apply to you.

The Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty
Dinan Forced Induction Systems (Superchargers and Turbochargers) and Stroker Engines will affect portions of the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty. In order to provide full warranty coverage for cars that are still covered by the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty (vehicles with less than 50,000 miles or 80,000 kilometers, and in service for less than 4 years from the date of original purchase or lease), Dinan offers a Supplemental Powertrain Warranty which is included with the purchase of any Supercharger System for recent applications (1996 and later E39 5 Series and E38 7 Series), as well as any Supercharger, Turbocharger or Stroker Engine applications that may be produced from July, 2002 forward.

The Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty covers the cost of replacement or repair of an eligible failed component in the powertrain when the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty has been affected by the installation of a Dinan Supercharger or Stroker Engine. The term of the Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty matches the remaining term of the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty, up to 4 years or 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers in Canada).

For the purposes of the Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty, the powertrain is defined as the engine (including all internal parts, seals and gaskets); engine mounts; clutch (when the failure is not due to normal wear and tear); transmission (including all internal parts, seals and gaskets); transmission mounts; driveshaft; flex disc; center bearing; U-joint, differential (including all internal parts, seals and gaskets); differential mounts; half shafts; and constant velocity joints.

Any additional labor charges incurred as a result of the installation of a Dinan component or modification, and not covered by the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty, are also covered by the Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty.

The specific terms, conditions and exclusions of Dinan's Product Warranty apply to the Dinan Supplemental Powertrain Warranty as well. Please refer to the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Vehicle Limited Warranty statement for the terms, conditions and exclusions to that warranty.

For all other warranty claims relating to original equipment components please refer to the Original Vehicle Manufacturer's New Car Limited Warranty.
END OF DINAN QUOTE.

So, on Dinan's part, is this just a lot of BLA-BLA-BLA............. talk or is there something here with Dinan's warranty, that "others" can't offer or will not offer, for whatever reason.
If the above warranty coverage apllies to "other companies/manufactures" why don't they do the same as DINAN and post the same or similar warrranty coverage information???
Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Robert

Thanks for the post. I have been reluctant to add mods as I am concerned about voiding the warranty. I know that Schnitzer and Alpina stuff does not affect the warranty but I was more interested in Gruppe M air intakes and Tubi exhausts. Surely these are superior to the stock items and provided they are well fitted should not affect the rest of the car.

Then there's the issue of insurance - don't get me started
