I brought the car to Allison BMW. for the past few visits (I am there far too often) I noticed that on the SA's desk there was a blue "thingy" which I thought is part of their wireless LAN. But then I noticed that he put my key into a holes in the device (2" opening) and a window poped open on his PC with tons of info about my car. Mileage, service green lights left, VIN, and a whole bunch of interesting info you will not thing are stored in YOUR KEY!...
I knew the key has a chip and a code, and I knew that its battery gets charged when inserted, but I didn't know that car data is stored in the key itself..
Am I the only one who thinks this is news?

We implemented this feature about a year ago. It's only on 99 or newer cars. It doesn't rat you out when you're speeding, but it does give us access to vital information on your vehicle without having to go outside to the actual car.
Very useful tool when you're in the center.
Say you have a lease return and the guy says there's 36,000 miles on the car/the odometer says 36000 miles but the key says the car has 65,000 miles/ BUSTED
That guy gets prosecuted for mileage fraud. If it was an honest mistake of the odometer being faulty, there would be a fault code or and error message. If everything is working properly, then he's in trouble.
Very useful tool for us actually!

Just to clarify the info. The key gets it's info directly from the DME, so there's no mis-information.The vehicle speed,over-rev,oil temps, service requirements and brake service requirements can be accessed from the DME directly...............among other info.

Wow, that's a cool little feature. I just hope it never progresses to anything more than that. It's bad enough some GPS equipped rental cars can actually get you busted for speeding. But I bet that saves a lot of time when running diagnostics!

Dear M5manny:
So my service advisor will be able to independently verify my top speed runs?

I have seen the little thingy, but I never realized that it uploaded information from the key. Very cool.
I do not think it gets all the data from the key I think the key ID's the car to BMWNA's computer data base and that is were the all info is stored no matter what dealer you go to they track the car's history.

The following link reveals some evidence of stored data in BMW keys.
